BOTTINEAU - North Dakota's Lake Metigoshe will be the site of about 100
two-person teams here for the National Bluegill Championship on Sunday, March 21.

Dave Genz, a professional angler from St. Cloud, Minn., with Paul Fabian, the chief executive officer of Clam Corp. in Minnesota, are producing the Ice Team tournament.

It will be the first bluegill tournament and possibly the only one to be held in North Dakota, to date.

The plans are in place for the teams to come to the Bottineau area for a number of days, and then return to their home sites of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and other areas.

"This type of event will spotlight what opportunities this area of the country can provide as well as introducing visitors to just how beautiful the Turtle Mountains and the state of North Dakota are and what we have to offer," said Bryan Schweitzer, Bottineau, a coordinator for the event.

The entry fee is $200 per team, with a first-place payout of $5,000 to the winner of the tourney.

The prizes will scale down gradually with the 11th to 15th place teams winning about $300.

Besides cash prizes, there will be a Vexilar SL18 Genz Pack, Fishtrap Duid and a Laler Mag Strike Masrel Auger. Clam Corp. also is providing two clam fish houses to the Bottineau Jaycees to use in its fund-raisers to help with the cost of an approximately $60,000 fish cleaning station being planned for Lake Metigoshe.

The Clam Corp. is bringing weight trailers to carry equipment.

On March 20, Clam Corp. will hold a seminar at the convention center at Twin Oaks at Lake Metigoshe on the rules and regulations for the tournament and explain North Dakota Game and Fish Department regulations which apply to this tourney. One member of each team must be present at the seminar and convey all the information to the rest of the team members.

Ice Team captain and Metigoshe veteran Dave Genz said, "There are lots of weeds, nice thick cabbage and cottontail. For the most part, vegetation thrives all the way out to 10 feet. In the winter, fish are taken from both sides of the fence too, making it reasonable to probe deep in the weeds or search outside for suspenders and wanderers."

The actual tournament takes place Sunday, March 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The festivities, however, get rolling on Saturday.

Ice Team is sponsoring a free Kids' Ice Fishing Clinic from 10 a.m. to noon in Twin Oaks Resort on South Lake Metigoshe.

Youngsters will have the opportunity to sit in a heated Clam portable fishhouse, look under the ice with an Aqua-Vu camera, jig Lindy lures, check depth and watch their bait on a Vexilar flasher, help drill a hole with a StrikeMaster Auger, and see the newest snowmobiles and ATV's from Arctic Cat. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

About a week before the tournament, the Bottineau Jaycees are hosting their 4th Annual Community Fishing Tourney. Genz and the Clam Corp. have registered their approval of this type of activity in a community. They say they are anxious to help the group move forward in setting up a fish-cleaning station at Lake Metigoshe to serve area people and visitors.[#333333][/#333333]
