Annual Greys Trip

Just got back from our annual trip up on the Greys in WY.  As usual, fishing was good to great.  Lots of fish on dries in the late morning/early afternoon and evenings when the terrestrials wake up.  When trout weren’t taking stuff off the top, I’d break out a nymphing rig and whack the whitefish.  Average cuts were 13-14” with a few 16”+ fish caught.  Lots of bigger whitefish with averages around 16”.  A couple pushing 18”.  I use a parachute Adams in 10 or 12 almost exclusively for dries. BWOs also work really well if the fish tire of the Adams.  Beaded Prince nymph and hares ears for nymphs.  If you’re not catching whitefish out of the deeper holes, add more weight to get the offering down.

I fish the stretch between Murphy Creek and Bear Creek.  Artificials only. Such a pretty place to wet a line!!

Oh man I love that area. Did a fair bit of horse packing for deer and elk all through that range and wet a fly many a times. See your photos brings back some fond memories. Congrats and ya got me thinking about when I will return maybe a fall grouse and fly run

I to have loving memories of Gray's river. I'm born in afton and we would rather vacation in Gray's river than Disneyland. Mover to salt lake after wwII. That yearly vacation to Corral creek was the best! Gods country

One of the proudest parent moments we had was when we took our kids to Disneyland and after returning home my daughter said, “I’m glad we go to Greys every summer.  Disneyland was fun, but ai like Greys better”.  My wife and I almost shed a tear right there!

Cowboy - I saw a big male blue up near the top of McDougal Gap off Sheep Creek.  Looked like he had your name written all over him.  I say go get him!!

It's been well over 20 years since my last visit to the Grays.  We hunted out of Poison Meadows for years and to me, that valley is the prettiest mountain valley I've ever seen.  We saw deer, elk, bear, and coyote in the meadow itself.  Never bothered fishing the river, but heard wonderful stories about the fish in there.

Beautiful! The one and only time I fished the greys was in high school about 30 years ago with my dad and his friend. I watched a huge brown chillin behind a rock as it was picking off drifting food in the water so I tossed a worm in front of it and it grabbed it. Only fish I caught, but as I cleaned it for dinner, it had a good sized sculpin in its guts.  It also rained on us most of the time we were there. good memories!
