Sloppy RP - 2/1
#1
Hit RP yesterday morning at first light and was amazed at all the tents on the ice already when I drove up.  Come to find out there was a fishing tournament there (spoke to one angler and apparently Echo is next on the list next weekend if I remember right).

Anyway, decided to try a couple new areas in hopes of a few trout, so drilled holes off Perch Point and another location a couple hundred yds further south.  No trout (not even marks) and a few perch in each location.  I spoke to a couple other anglers spread out along that line and consensus was that it was super slow for them.  I didn’t put up my tent to be more mobile, but by 9:30 or so, it was put up a tent or get soaked.

With nothing happening on the east side, I hiked to the west side and settled about 500 yds north of the last restroom pull off maybe 300 yds from the shoreline.  Drilled a hole and immediately the perch were hitting.  They were all over the bottom, but mostly 7”ers, so I worked to within about 150 yds of shore trying to find bigger, but the fish were few and no schools, so went back and pitched the tent over my initial hole. It was fast just like Mildog’s post the day before.  If it took 15 seconds for a bite, that was a lifetime.  Most times, as soon as it hit the bottom (or before) they would hit.  Lots of doubles (which I disliked because it was normally two 6-7”ers instead of that one 10”+ fish).  It stayed like this for 4 hours with one small slowdown around 1:30.  It boiled back up about 1:45, and I left at 2:10.  Ended up keeping 30 averaging between 8-9” with 3-4 that were 10”+.  Tried and true chartreuse/green Halie with a yellow Rat finke above tipped with eyeball.

Caught one nice bow that was 18” but a little more slender and lost one other that hit right below the ice (twice) and broke my line on the 2nd hit/hookset.  As mentioned in a reply to Icerman’s post, I did not have issues getting the non-keeper perch back down.  Lost a few likely, but I’d say 95%+ of those 100+ that I threw back made it just fine.

Good report! I hope this warm spell breaks and freezes the slop back up . Looks like it will chill down again at end the week and firm things up.

I hit RP for a couple of hours Friday. Fished south of perch point and got a few but pretty slow for us. I did land a good bow in 30' of water on my perch gear. When I cleaned him I found a surprise inside. I'm blaming the trout for scaring all the perch away from our hole rather than my laziness in not moving like you did. I don't recall ever seeing a 6" perch in the gut of a trout before. Next time I'll get off my butt and hike around and look for more active areas rather than camping out in the same spot.

Nice bow!! , I’ve seen smaller perch in some trout but not that size! Thanks for sharing that!
It does pay to move to find the active perch schools.

I didn't read your report until after I got home or I would have moved around more. I had a couple of guys with me that were warm and cozy in the tent and didn't want to move but I should have got out and explored other areas. Thanks for your report.

That's the hard thing about perch fishing (OK, maybe just fishing or anything in general), if it's not working where you're at, at some point you 1) move and hope for better, or 2) sit tight and hope for better. The only thing a tent does in this situation is persuade most people to go with option 2.

That's why I don't have a tent ---- too heavy to haul on & off, would have to move it when I move, and if bad conditions warrant a tent I ain't going.

? I still drag my tent around in the sled and don’t put it up unless it’s a bit chilly and windy. I’ve Only used it twice this year, but I still drag it around. Then only when good action spot located do I put it up. A couple trips ago I put it up a bit premature dead zone after only a couple fish!! Luckily found some good action only 60 yards away so I walked it over without taking it down. ?
Kept the door open and back to the wind and kept the sun off my face! Nice!?

I went fishing near the damn on Saturday. We caught a few perch, it was a bit slow. Biggest one was probably close to 10 inches which was nice.
