Jordan River ponds 10800 South 4/27/04
#1
I went to those ponds on the West side of the Jordan river and about 10800 South. I was amazed how many people came and went during the two hours I was there. I caught one 13" rainbow on power bait. Lots of guys fly fishing, I was wishing I had brought my fly rod it looked like a blast. That place looks like a place my wife wouldn't mind going to have a picnic with the kids. It was a good time.

Thanks for the report. What's the best way to get there?

Were the guys with the fly rods doing any good? I believe it got stocked not too long ago, so thats probably why all the people were there. Ive only got one fish on a fly in all the times Ive ever fished it, and that was when the pond was locked up in ice. I happened to be fly fishing the jordan and wasn't doing too well, so I came up and tried through a hole with an egg fly and got one. Maybe I'll head down there and break out the fly rod, it has been over a week since I caught a fish on it.

I fly fished those ponds a week ago and did very well. Strip a beadhead nymph very slow and you'll have every guy asking what you're using.

I fished both, a little bit different retrieves for each pond made a difference. I didn' t know they each had a name so I'm not sure which is which so I'll call them north and south.

South pond the fish liked just a plain old VERY slow pull.

North pond they liked tiny quick 1-2" strips, because of the tiny strips this is a slow retrieve. Make sure the actual strip is quick, it's just a small flick of the wrist.

Turn South off of 10600 So. just east of Gecko's (it's a resturant on the West side of the Jordan). Then Continue on that road and you'll see the ponds on the East. Good Luck.

All the guys fly fishing were at the South pond. I did look over to see a guy miss one. I really didn't need to see to know he missed one he made it known verbally. The North pond where I was fishing had a lot of trout hitting the surface.

I believe they stock those ponds weekly throughout the summer. At one time they were talking about stocking them with catfish, too, but I don't know if that ever happened.

Ok here is the info on these ponds. the north pond is about 12 to 15 ft deep and has some bigger fish, the south pond is only about 6ft deep and mostly has 8 to 10in planters. they are stocking both ponds every other week. as for catfish they planted a bunch but most did not make it. If you fish there make sure you have your licence and remember the limit is 4 fish, both DWR and South Jordan police check them all the time. they south pond is set up for kids to fish and is planted with more fish. South Jordan is still working on the area and will be really nice when it's done. as for a 13in that is big for there. i have not seen many that big come out of there.
good luck fish'n

I HAVE NOT BEEN THERE IN A LONG TIME BUT TWO YEARS AGO, THEY WERE PLANTING BIG CATFISH THERE. A COUPLE OF GUYS I WORKED WITH (BOTH OF THEM ARE DEAD NOW) WERE THERE ONE DAY WHEN I WENT THERE AND THEY HAD A BIG COOLER FULL OF CATS. IT WAS BEFORE THE LIMIT WAS CHANGED TO 4 OF ANY FISH ON THOSE PONDS AND THEY HAD ABOUT 15 OR16 CATS AND WHEN THEY PUT THEM IN THE BIG COOLER THEY HAD THE TAILS OF THE FISH WERE HANGING OUT ABOUT 8-10 INCHES. I THINK THE REASON THE CATFISH DIDN'T DO SO WELL THERE IS BECAUSE THEY WERE GONE TWO DAYS AFTER THEY WERE STOCKED. I THINK THAT THE DWR'S URBAN FISHING PROJECT IS A GREAT SUCCESS BECAUSE IT HAS PUT SOME FIRE IN A LOT OF PEOPLE TO BECOME HOOKED ON FISHING. I JSUT WISH THEY WOULD STOCK BOUNTIFUL POND WITH THOSE KIND OF MONSTERS.

The cats do make it, but a lot of them get stressed on the trip up here (I believe they truck em' in from arizona or somewhere) that some don't make it. I watched guys catch em' in the middle of february, during a snowstorm. I couldn't believe they were catching channels in that kind of weahter. I had been going down there ice fishing all winter and it was great. Some times we got 35 bows in two hours with three people fishing. I think in eight trips we got 114 trout, not bad for five minutes from the home. Your absolutely correct about the cops. We had em' come out on the ice and check for our licenses. I thought the ice was going to break, big fat guy. I didn't even know cops had the authority to check for your licenses, it was kinda weird, I thought it might be illegal to icefish those ponds at first, but he just wanted to see our licenses. Make sure you have your license though-$95 ticket if they don't give you a warning. My brother had to go to court, but they dropped the charge. I havent got any cats this year, but those ponds take a beating, so i don't fish em' too much. The only time I ever got any elbow room was while ice fishing, and lots of times there would be other people out there with me. A few would drive up to the pond, see me out there, and decide to walk out where there was water on top of the ice. A lot of people fell through making that mistake. I'll give her a try in the not too distant future though.
