Southern Nevada Fishing Report 5/27/04
#1
LAKE MEAD - Anglers who will be heading to the lake for Memorial Day weekend should find big crowds and good fishing as the action for striped bass has been holding steady in the Overton Arm and is improving in the Boulder Basin.

Sporadic striper boils have been seen over the past two weeks in the Boulder Basin. Boils occur when stripers push their favorite forage fish, threadfin shad, to the lake's surface where they engage in feeding frenzies. This feeding and splashing gives the appearance that the surface of the water is boiling.

Boaters who were fishing in the Overton Arm had good luck over the weekend, according to Walt deMattos, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) creel census clerk. He checked one boat that had five anglers who caught 125 stripers, most of which were around a pound.

Stripers are being caught with Sassy Shad lures or fishing with cut anchovies. Catfish are being pulled from deep water in the Overton Arm by boaters who are fishing with anchovies.

The better areas for stripers in the Overton Arm have been St. Thomas, Fish Island, Ann Marguret Cove and Stewart's Point. Anglers who have been fishing in the Boulder Basin have had recent success at the 33 Hole and Special Events Beach.

One boater reported to NDOW that he caught and released several largemouth bass over the weekend while fishing near St. Thomas. Crank baits and black artificial worms are catching the bass.

LAKE MOHAVE - Fishing has been fair for largemouth and striped bass at Cottonwood Cove, but poor at Willow Beach, according to NDOW.

Over the weekend NDOW creel census clerks checked 50 stripers, most of which were caught around the narrows above Cottonwood. Drifting with anchovies and squid continues to be the preferred method for catching the fish.

Largemouth bass are being caught above and below Cottonwood with tube lures and plastic worms.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Very good fishing should be in store for the large number of anglers who are expected to be on hand for Memorial Day weekend.

Dan Maes, NDOW installation specialist, said anglers have been enjoying good success this week and he expects the action to continue for both rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

Trout up to two pounds have been caught this week at Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs. However, most of the trout that are now being pulled from the lakes weigh a pound or less.

PowerBait has been working for anglers who have been fishing from the dams. Fly fishing has been productive as well for those using Montana nymphs and hares ear nymphs.

Largemouth bass fishing has been fair and should be getting even better as the water temperature rises.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - The lake was heavily planted with rainbow and brown trout this spring by NDOW, so fishing should be excellent for the holiday weekend. Another 5,000 rainbows were stocked last week.

A variety of baits are taking the rainbows, including PowerBait, live worms and flies. Small spinners and spoons will catch the brown trout.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - Memorial Day is traditionally the best time of year for fishing at the Lincoln County lake, and this year is no exception. John Hutchings, NDOW biologist, said anglers are catching stocked rainbow trout, largemouth bass and white crappie.

Last week the lake produced several largemouth bass that weighed from 3 to nearly 5 pounds. However, most of the bass that have been caught recently weigh well under a pound.

Micro crappie jigs fished under a bobber are taking pan-sized crappie. Worms are also catching the fish.

SCHROEDER RESERVOIR - The stream above the lake was stocked with rainbow trout last week. Fishing should be fair in the stream, but could be difficult in the lake.

Schroeder Reservoir is located in Beaver Dam State Park approximately 29 miles east of Caliente. Dirt roads that lead to the area were recently graded.
