Pulled the plug on land lines with the latest events/problems with my phone company. Phone service kept getting interrupted and calls dropped from a landline so I came off the grid on Saturday and the wife and I are sporting two new cell phones and don't have to tolerate the soliticitors any more. For once I had a quiet weekend and didn't have 30-40 unsolicited calls.

I have been considering voip. Has anyone ever had any experience with Vonage? I was just reading that you can get unlimited local calls 500 min long distance and every calling feature you ever heard of for 24.99 month. And you can keep your own phone number. Sounds to good to be true. I would like to talk to someone who has tried it.

I took that leap too. It was also very expensive to have a land line with such minimal use. For two lines it was like $55 a month (with no-long distance). What a racket.. Our cell phones have free long distance and all the features+ of the land line. Congrats on your freedom from the land line racket.

Hey Kent, right now until I think July 16th you can get 3 Mbps Comcast cable broadband internet for 19.99/month if you already have the cable modem, if not, then you can rent one from them for $3 a month for a total of $22.99 per month. There is usually a $100 installation but right now it's half off only 50 bucks. This price of 19.99 only lasts for 6 months, however then you go back to regular price. You're only locked in for those 6 months.
I only know all this cause I saw a commercial for it yesterday and called to ask cause I'm thinking of getting it.

[size 1]I now have Internet, cable, and telephone service (includes 180 minutes a month of long-distance calling, which is more than we ever use) through Comcast. I am just wondering if there are options that I should be exploring to save money -- by keeping the Internet through Comcast and exploring other possibilities for the other services, or combinations thereof. Mike, I was way off[crazy].. Asked the wife what we pay and she said $45 or $50. Our connection isn't through a phone line though, its through the cable. My phone lines were removed when we had our retaining wall installed. It kinda sounds like we may have the same connection. Super fast.

Thanks guys, now I know I did the right thing. Next step is to get a laptop with a calling card in it for unlimited wireless internet. but that is pricey too.

When I saw "Off the Grid" I thought you went off the electrical grid. I read two magazines, one called Country side and the other called Backwoods home, that talk about going off the grid.

No I'm not prepared to go that far but there are some here at work who are almost close enough to do just that. With solar panels, and emergency generators, the doomsayers are preparing for the 3rd world war which they think will happen any day.
Just got tired of the BS with the folks trying to sell stuff to me and all that crap. Then to top it all off, use of the internet ended at work on Monday. So I can use a friends computer at lumch time, and then find one after work someplace. Didn't think I used the net that much but I do a lot, now I really miss it while at work.
For all out there, PM me if you want I can get PM,but can't use the net anymore at work, at least from my desk.
