Electric Lake Report
#1
Fished Electric Lake for a couple hours yesterday with my granddaughter. Five year olds don't have a very long attention span -- she was ready to go after catching one fish. Caught (or at least had bites) them on minnows, crawlers and PowerBait. I had to make do with only two minnows. I need to have Fuzzyfisher show me the fine art of catching minnows there in a minnow trap. I sure missed my casting net.

There was a man there with his wife and two teenage daughters who was camping and fishing. He and his family couldn't even buy a bite. He admitted that he didn't know much about fishing. I told two of his daughters, as they walked by, to tell him to come over and let me teach him how to catch some fish (and I would have even been willing to give him some necessary tackle -- including a fly and bubble for catching them in the evening) but I guess his pride wouldn't let him come over. All he could do was shout from a distance, "If you catch a bunch of minnows in your minnow trap I want some." Foolish man -- I have been catching fish for about 50 years from these small mountain reservoirs, and with the sharing of a little knowledge he could also have been catching fish.

Sadly sometimes pride takes over and spoils fun that could be had by all, and it appears you ran into just that sort of situation Kent. But hey, no one can claim you didnt offer help and a wee bit of advice needed. I suppose its like that old story, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. Or as we old Sp Forker's say,, harse. Whats more, the guy might have been a complete harses a--

Nice report. I know what you mean about 5 year olds. I have a grandaughter that is 5 also, that is why I take her to Maybey pond to fish alot of little blue gills in there to keep her busy. I have a grandson that will be 3 soon and he has his own fishing pole, we just haven't gotten brave enough to put a hook on the end yet. But he does know you need something. If we don't put something on the end he gets really upset, so we usually put a small weight so he can try to cast it.
As for the man who wouldn't ask for help, at least you tried. I on the other hand welcome any help I can get. It is to Sad that you didn't get a chance to help those girls get a fish. The best times I have had fishing is when you see the look on someones face hook into a fish that hasn't done that before. You can tell by the look that they are HOOKED.

I bet you also had carn and cricks (also known as creeks by some outside of Happy Valley) in Spanish Fork. I know we had them in Payson! Aah those were the days, "When men were men and women were too!".

Hey did you fish on the side were the boat ramp used to be or the side were the dam is? I have had lots of luck on the dam side i have never been skunked there before.Always catch them there with spoons or dragging a worm with a marshmellow slowly. The dragging the worm part seems to keep my kids minds interested in fishing wondering when they are going to get a strike.

We fished the side by the boat ramp. I fished by the dam on 2/13/03; however, it was a long walk across the dam and then down to the ice (also in about 2-3 feet of snow). When you fish by the dam do you cross the dam and walk down?

hey Kent.. you can fish the dam side in the summer and you dont have to go down the dam there is a road about 1/2 mile back from the dam that you can drive right down close to the lake..note 4x4 will be needed to drive right to the water and watch out for rain you dont want to be on that road if it gets wet..

Is that the road that used to be the access road to Cleveland Reservoir before Electric Lake was formed? I realize I am dating myself here.

Yes thats were i usually fish e-lake.I have been succesful there.I just walk across the dam and walk down to the water. And the fish are not that far offshore there. We get out strikes whether it be by worms or spoons about 5 feet out.Theres always a ton of minnows right there on the edge that attract the cutts.

Gee, Kent, I didn't know you started fishing when you were 30, I thought you were a little younger than that! Did your gear fit into your handcart? What was Utah Lake like when the trout were in it? Was George Washington fishing when he threw the silver dollar across the Potomac?

It also had a pretty little stream that meandered through it.
