The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission warns boaters not to take vessels out unless absolutely necessary.
Although the Wildlife Commission does not intend at this time to close its boating access areas, wildlife enforcement officials advise against boating on any flooded waterway. Many western lakes and rivers, flooded last week by Hurricane Frances, contain floating and submerged debris that can endanger boaters and damage vessels.
High winds and dam releases can also create conditions for vessel instability, through water surges or wave action. Smaller rivers and creeks are prone to flash flooding. Walking too close to the water’s edge can also be dangerous due to unexpected changes in water levels.
Wave action created by boats and other recreational vehicles on the water also creates additional property damage and impacts to environmentally sensitive areas during high water conditions.
The Commission urges boaters to secure their vessels and wait until water levels have returned to normal before venturing onto a flooded waterway.
