COMINS LAKE
Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
[#990033]EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR [/#990033]
Cooler weather contributed to a drop in fishing pressure from the previous week. The anglers that fished reported that fishing continues to be slow but fish were caught from the dock. A few brown and rainbow trout were caught using PowerBait.
The best times to catch fish continue to be early in the mornings or late afternoons.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Fishing pressure continues to be very low. The few anglers that tried their luck did manage to catch a few rainbow trout. The fish averaged 11 inches and were taken with PowerBait and nightcrawlers.
Boaters are still catching striped bass in the Boulder Basin while shore anglers continue to be frustrated because there has not been any consistent movement toward shore by the game fish.
Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) creel census clerks continue to see fair numbers of stripers at the fish cleaning stations that have been caught by boaters off Boulder Beach. Fish weighing from 1 to 3 pounds are being caught by casting top water lures and drifting anchovies.
One angler told NDOW that he had no success for stripers and saw very few anglers while fishing from shore on Tuesday ( 10/19/04) morning at Special Events Beach. He did say that anglers have had fairly good luck for channel catfish when fishing from shore in that area. Special Events Beach is closed to access from dusk until dawn.
Stripers that weigh just under a pound are being caught at Fish Island, Ann Marguret Cove and Stewart’s Point in the Overton Arm. Those areas have been productive for catfish as well.
The 20 anglers who competed in a largemouth bass fishing tournament held over the weekend at Echo Bay experienced poor fishing. Very few largemouth bass were caught, but one angler reported he caught seven smallmouth bass.
[#990033]LAKE MOHAVE[/#990033]
Strong winds have been keeping fishers off the water. Those who managed to go out have told NDOW that the action for striped bass has been fair from the narrows above Cottonwood Cove to Owl’s Point. Stripers measuring from 10 to 13 inches have been caught recently by fishing with anchovies and chumming with corn.
Willow Beach will be stocked with rainbow trout on Friday ( 10/22/04) morning.
Dana Johnson, Installation Supervisor, said that rainbow trout fishing has been excellent. Anglers fishing Cold Springs Reservoir experienced very good success for recently stocked trout. A few fish that measured 18 – 20 inches were taken as well.
Anglers fishing Haymeadow and Adams-McGill reservoirs were successful landing rainbow trout that averaged 11 inches.
The final channel catfish plants of the year took place on Wednesday, Oct. 13, in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. Trout plants are scheduled to begin at the park ponds on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
Chris Crookshanks, NDOW biologist, said the fishing has been hot and the temperatures have been cold at reservoirs in the Ely area.
Over the weekend, Crookshanks checked a number of anglers who were enjoying good fishing for recently planted rainbow trout as well as hold over fish at Comins Lake south of Ely. Wooly buggers and small nymphs along with PowerBait and nightcrawlers are catching the fish.
Similar fishing is being found at Illipah Reservoir east of Ely, although most of the success is for planter trout. Recently stocked rainbows are being caught at Cave Lake southeast of Ely.
The first snowfall of the year hit Ely this week. Temperatures have been dipping to the freezing level at night.
