car help.,...

i have talked to a number of poeple about this so i figured i should bring it up here.....maybe some one has had the same problem or whatever..

at first my car was having a hard time starting, but the other day, it just wouldnt start up and when it did it idled Really rough for about 30 seconds and then it was fine... and now i cant get it to start at all. i have a 92 honda civic 1.5 litre, we have checked everything!! at first i thought it was the fuel pump, or filter because it sounded like it wasnt getting enought fuel, tested and checked both and they were fine.

i finally did some tests on the ignition, and there is no spark to the plugs. it just turns over for ever. but when i let go of the key it sparks once, this thing has got me so stumped that i dont know what to do... someone told me that it could be my ignition module... could this be the case?? anyone that has any information would be greatly appreciated. i havnt gone fishing in a week!! please help!

Did you check something as simple as the battery or the alternator? Your battery could be dead, or it could be drained because your alternator has failed. It could also be the fuel injector/carburator as well, but I'd start with getting the battery and alternator checked.

took the alternator out and had it tested and it said that it was fine.... and i just bought a new battery!!! i am stumped, but i am going work all day tomarrow. if anyone has any ideas on what it could be please help!! thanks for the help.

I'm not real familiar with your particular car, but some things could be easy to rule out. If you suspect that it might be a fuel problem, try some starting fluid in the intake before starting it.

Ignition problems can be a lot trickier. If it's a newer car, it could be the computer, or it could be a coil, cap and rotor, module, etc. It can get expensive to start swapping parts without knowing which one it is.

If the starter cranks the engine fast enough, then your battery's fine.

Is it a manual transmission? You could try push starting it, just to see if that works.

You could also try googling for answers. Just type in your car, engine and symptoms into google, and you might find a common problem, or at least a place to start.


In doing some searches through cartrackers.com and google, I keep seeing references to a main relay, which I guess would be a pretty common problem. You might want to investigate that.

it sounds to me like your ignition coil/module, somthing along those lines. unfortunately theres not alot of testing for those its all hit and miss.

no spark I would say with that year of car ignition module is your problem or maybe a bad rotor and cap wires plugs

thank you all for you help, i will be tearing into it on sunday and monday...I thought i was the coil or the ignition module. if it is neither of these i will jump my car off of a cliff.

you said that it gave you spark as you let go of the key, check the ignition switch, it could have a short in it. I worked at checker and I know they sell them (you can take your lock & tumbler out and use your old one, leaving you with the same key), I don't know about your car in particular but I sold a tone of them (mostly for Ford and Chev pickups) in the 5yrs I worked there.

just took the ignition coil and the ignition control module into auto zone to get it tested.. they said that the coil is perfect, but the icm(module) was bad, so i am pretty sure that is the problem. i am getting one tomarow so i will post back if it the problem.. thank you all for the help.

Ok, here's my $0.02 worth, realizing that I'm not a mechanic, but have had my share of car problems.

If the engine cranks over well it isn't the battery or alternator.

If you are sure there is no spark at the time it is cranking, it is somewhere in the ignition system, not the fuel system. Make sure you do this same test on all plugs.

It sounds like they think the module was shot. I would go with that. If it still runs rough, replace the wires and plugs, especially if they have never been replaced. In cold damp weather like this, rotted wires easily lose their spark. They are relatively cheap to replace and it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace them anyway.

If that still doesn't fix it, I would go the next step which is the cap / rotor, etc.

My guess is that the module will fix it. If not, replacing the wires should. Based on my experience, problems with bad wires are far more pronounced when it is damp outside and when engines are cold.
