Weber River this weekend
#1
Fished the Weber river this weekend for whitefish. Boy, that was fun. Thats the first time I'd ever fished with flies exclusively. It was a definite learning process but the fish were there and they were all pretty thick and long. I caught only four the first day but met up with Leaky and Sparky who helped me get on some fish the following day. The second day I caught nine and really started getting a feel for the bite. Man, its a soft bite when you get it to happen too. I only had two fish where I actually picked up the "thump" when they hit it. The rest, I just felt a drag, picked up line and the fish were there. I did see one guy catch about a twenty inch brown on a white tube jig, so that was cool. Folks if you are looking for some nice warm weather, brilliant sun, and beautiful scenery, its outside the valley. Get higher up and you forget all about the crud we live in down here. For all the fly fishermen/women, and those who would like to try flies, I caught all of my fish on gray scuds, and a flashback sow bug in a white color with a 3/0 split shot below my two dropper lines. I didn't catch any on pheasant tails or prince nymphs but some folks have told me that they work too. Anyway, its a good place to try anywhere you can get access and its kinda out in farmland so you don't have to worry about running into lots of people either.

Oh, the huge amounts of sacrilege that I'm about to invoke upon myself.... [pirate] I was fishing flies with a spinning rod and reel. I was working the provo river "bounce" method with the scuds and sow bugs. But.... but but but.... I was at least fishing flies so hopefully all the members of the Izaak Walton league will have mercy on my cramped fishing style.... [angelic] Just teasin you guys... I just haven't bought the fly rod and reel setup yet but if this last weekend was any indication, it might be time to join the ranks, at least part time anyway, for panfish, whitefish, possibly some trout, although I have preferred methods there, and maybe some summer morning topwater bassin. It sure looks good when all of you regulars do it, I've just been talking myself out of it... lack of patience, too much time, elitist sport.... blah blah blah.... Many of you on here have proved me wrong in at least one and usually more of those aspects, for which I'm eternally grateful. Especially to Leaky, without whom I'd never have experienced the throb of a headshaking whitefish, let alone one on a fly. And, shameless plug for Sportsmans, at least the one in Provo, thanks to Mike in the fishing department for pointing me in this direction regarding whitefish specifically, because normally those fish wouldn't have ever even entered the scope of my fishing focus.

What ever it takes to have fun! Fly rod or spin.
I think you will find that your catch rate will soar when you fish the same flies on a fly rod. Because you only catch a small amount of the fish that are actually bitting when you go off of sence of feel. Fly fishing is all about seeing the take. And it is only 1 in 10 strikes that actually hook themselfs so you can feel them. That is also the reason for the strike indicator.

I have been fly fishing for almost 30 years. I love all kinds of fishing but my first love is fly fishing. You mention purists...do your own thing. I fly fish, tie my own flies, build my own fly rods, etc. I also throw dead minnows and shrimp for catfish, plugs and jigs for wipers, plastics and topwater for bass, jigs for lake trout, cutting holes through the ice, etc. Fishing to me is the single most relaxing therapy I could ask for. We are fortunate to live close to all kinds of fish species and have numerous options as to how to take them. The fun comes from the study of the species you choose and coming up with ways to catch them. Enjoy "whatever blows your dress up". Just be ethical. Obey the rules, respect property, care for the area where you fish, take only what you will use. You don't have to be set on one species and one method. Those who do really miss out on other very satisfying ways to enjoy this great resource. Enjoy the outdoors, take your family and laugh out loud. You only live once. Enjoy it!

Glad to hear you finally came clean! LOL In flyfishing only places you could have got in trouble with useing a spinning set up. They get really strict about the equiptment and gear used. I was i Washington State and got a warning for that. I'm guessing its about the same everywhere. But if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will set me straight. As usual. But thats ok too. Nice post, thanks.

Hey Leaky... good to see you on here too. I tipped my fly container..... Oh, that caused some agony.... trying to find the dark flies in the grass..... So all I had was the light colored flies. But I fished up from where we met up, upstream to the bridge. So, I didn't even hit the section you showed me. But don't worry, I"m not about to go up there and pound it so hard it becomes overfished or anything... all things in moderation. [Smile] And I wont be dishing the info other than what I've already said. Its your spot, you share if you want, but all I'm gonna do is post what I think I can get away with. [Wink] Oh, I did take Toby and Buddy with me but I don't think they'll be telling anyone the secrets either.... That one hole right below where we met up.... with the log on it.... 3 fish first thing.... I couldn't believe it. But it was definitely a few here and a few there thing... I didn't catch them everywhere. Some of the most promising appearing holes gave up nothing. I did catch one little rainbow trout though...that was pretty cool. About our future date, remind me again because I'm the epitomy of forgetful. When and where? I have my daughter this weekend but if you want to meet up and fish somewhere next weekend, let me know. I figure that if I go up through PC, I only use about half the gas... I dont' know why I went all the way up to Roy to get there..... [unsure]. But I really was glad to see you and Sparky and fish with you and thank you again oh whitefish master for sharing the wisdom and the Golden Karma with a lowly spin fisherman. I'm endebted for sure. One day, we'll have to fish Fish Creek or Diamond Fork or possibly some other smaller streams I know of where your techniques would garner you enormous numbers of troutalinis........ Or something like that.

River - Deer Creek and Jordanelle!!!!!!! Remember???? Not this weekend guy - supper bowl time!!! Maybe next, especially since those crazy cliff chickens will be out of season! I'll keep in touch, if you promise more than 11 words. You can talk to Sparky if it suits ya better. [Wink]
