Perchport Report 2-2-05
#1
[cool]Went to the Rock today to try for a Perch Limit. Went on the West side (for my first time) at the 2nd outhouse. Was the first one on the ice, but I was out a little too far from where the Perch were. Fish-C-Mann was there about 20 yards in from where I was and graciously gave me a Perch eyeball to tip my hook with, and after about the 3rd Perch he caught and I hadn't had a bite yet, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I wasn't in the right spot. Shortly after this I got on the horn and asked if any BFT'rs were in the neighborhood and Skinney-Lynnie gave a shout back. He was over by the dam and I said come on over, cause it was his first time at the Rock. Right after this, who else from this board would stroll on out to the ice but BFT's newest papa 2nd time over-CBR! That was a cool surprise, so anyway Craig drills a hole right by the booie (sp?) and I came in a little closer to Fish-C-Man and CBR, and catching finally got going.

I think I ended up with about 10 and CBR 16 or 17 and Fish-C-Man got his limit. The bite shut off promptly at 12 or so and never turned back on, so I left at 1:30. THe other two left at the perfect time, right when the bite shut off.

Fishing was a little slower than what I expected, but it was nice meeting Fish-C-Man and Skinney-Lynnie today, and it's always fun fishing with CBR.

[cool]You know, when I was there earlier today I thought it was about 4 or 5 inches, but I measured it before I went home and it's SIX inches thick. It'll make a ton of noise though and kind of freak you out.

My first trip to Rockport was a good experience. It took me and "The Champ" a little while to figure out how to catch the perch there. Fortunately, we got some good assistance from Out4Trout and Fish-C-Man, as well as from other people nearby. Using Out4Trout's Trout Magnets helped a lot (THANKS!), but the best secret was to keep our bait/lures a foot or so above the bottom. We didn't have much luck when our baits were right on the bottom, but as soon as we reeled up another full crank the fish started biting. We also caught fish on white paddle bugs and fluorescent red ice flies, all tipped with perch eyes.

As usual, "The Champ" came from behind and caught more fish than I did. At the end, between 1:00 and 2:00, when the bite had shut down and nobody was catching anything, she kept getting nibbles every five minutes or so. She pulled in fish after fish, and was tickled that all the fisher-MEN were coming over and asking her how she did it. I couldn't match her myself. Toward the end, I even put on exactly the same lure bait and fished down the same hole at the same depth, and she would still catch the fish and I couldn't. That's OK. She left happy, and she wants to go again. I guess that's the way to create an outdoors woman--let her beat you.

[cool]That really sucks about the strep throat thing, man. That stuff is going around bigtime right now! My daughter got that crap from church last Sunday. My Ward sucks! We have a lot of poor/low class people there that bring their kids to church weather they are sick as a dog, or not, not giving a crap if their kids get the other kids sick! I know, I know, a lot of you guys are gonna say "that's why you should be fishing on Sunday and not at church," and that's actually a good argument in this case, 'cause my daughter has gotten sick probably 3 or 4 times and it's always on a Sunday night, or Monday morning and she's only 9 months old!

Hope you get fealing better, Utcatman!
