Berry on sat.
#1
What's the latest on the berry? Going up tomorrow with some newcomers and won't be able to go on machines so we'll probably stick fairly close to the marina in the morning, might be able to get on a wheeler in the afternoon. I know they're getting finicky now around the crowds, but what's been the most effective strategy and tipping meat?

If your goal is to catch many fish, you better plan on hiking aways. I will also be fishing Strawberry Saturday and I will be walking just over a mile, each way, to get to where I will be fishing. As far as baits and techniques, I will start large with jigs/spoons tipped with salted minnows, and then moving to smaller offerings if the fish tell me that they are not interested in larger offerings. I will likely start in about 20 feet of water, and move deeper or even shallower if the fishfinder is not marking many fish.

Kent/Redbeard,

I will probably be up there on Saturday also. I think my plan is to hike away from the crowds as well. If you want to hook up out there somewhere, let me know. I was thinking of parking at CCE and walking and walking.

I love to get away from crowds and have walked 2-3 miles before to get away from people but my son-in-laws brother is bringing his 8 and 10 year old daughters so I think I'm not going to far, at least in the morning. I think they'll pack up by noon or before and I don't stop fishing till dark, thankfully they're driving separate. Do you catch your own minnows and prepare them yourself? I'm going with several packages of chub minnows, anything extra I could do with them and what's the best way to hook them on a jig? This forum is great cause you can get feedback from several people and everybody is helpful.
Thanks,
Jeff

I net my own minnows at Strawberry with my casting net. I have had the best success with ones that I cured with coarse (no iodine) salt and then vacuum sealed them. In the past, through the ice I have probably been using too large of a piece of minnow, and even fished with the whole small minnows at times. With too large of a minnow offering, one tends to miss lots of bites. I have learned from some other fishermen, who have fished with minnows far longer than I have, that one can get by with a small sliver of minnow (just enough to provide some flavoring).
