Hey there guys,
Went out on the Premier. I guess we had around 20 anglers. Had plenty of rail room. Danny skippered the boat with Jimmy lending a hand on deck. Two skippers for one deal is great !! Oh ya... Bill was in the galley and made his 'gonna be world-famous any time now' Smelt Sandwich.
Again, we fished the inside of Catalina. Weather was just great with little wind that only showed up just before time to pull the hook and head home. You couldn't ask for better water quality as far as I'm concerned.
We moves only a couple of times and every spot got us fish. Fishing the kelp strands and really close in is just a blast.... especially with the water clairty. Dive boat within sight must have had a blast.
I hooked (with red leadhead and frozen squid) and fought a yellow for about 5 minutes before the clever creature finally got my fifteen pound test into the kelp. Was doin' real well with my flippin' stick and Abu-Garcia real set up until then. Fish got within 15 feet of the boat with color before that last, fatal (for me) run. Estimated 25-30 pounder. It's finally sunk in!! NOTE TO SELF: It's Summer Idiot! Use the right gear!
As with the last few trips, we used frozen squid and fished fairly shallow. Everyone pretty much fished various setups until it became pretty obvious, from we regulars sucess, that the real deal was a light quarter to 3/8th ounce yellow leadhead with a whole frozen squid triple hooked. Still dropper loop got got lots of perch and bass. Casting to the edge of the kelp and getting bit in the top top 20 feet of the water column was the norm. Boat caught calicos, whitefish, sheephead, opaleye, blacksmith perch, and my almost yellow. I gotta stop thinkin' bout it!
Action was continual on the bass and everybody had a chance to take fish home if not limits. 4 pound calico won the jackpot. The angler that caught it put in the bait tank for weighing later and future release but alas at the weigh-in the poor thing had croaked! Weird too because other small fish were happly finning around at the bottom of the tank!
We had the wind at our back when returning to Pierpoint so we fairly flew back to the docks.
Great trip, boat, crew, and a couple of new fishing pals.....going again Monday !
