Hey there guys,
Went out on the 3/4 day Premier out of Pierpoint with the usual bunch of club memebers and other veteran regulars. Lots of talent on the boat. And .......Ms Manners would give us a gold star. Nice lite load and plenty of elbow-room. Jimmy skippered the boat with Mikie back and doing deck duties. Bill was in the galley with his usual great chow And ...... world famous Smelt Sandwich!
Left at 6am, picked up some nice anchovies and sardines then headed out for the inside of Catalina. Great weather going to CAT and all the time we were there. Early morning provided us with a no wind, decent current, and unbelievable weather conditions. Fished fairly shallow water amoung the sparce kelp strands as well as the larger mostly open areas adjacent to the larger kelpbeds/structure. Water was clean and had to be in the low to mid-sixtys but I didn't ask.
The fishing was so good we got fish every stop we made the whole trip. Truth is we just moved occasionally to give a spot some rest and would then immediately pick up where we left off at the next stop. Most fished the anchovies and sardines but us plastic nuts stayed the busiest! I used an outfit that you might fish pike or muskies. The water was so clear I used 15 pound test line, a tiny black swivel, 4 foot of 12 pound test fluro, 1/4 oz. leadhead with a Kaliln 4 inch green/pearl or two-tone green with metalflake swimbait.
The bite was mostly on top or the top 10 foot of the water column. A lot of the bait soakers were fly lining anchovies for bass or sardines for hopefully larger bass or yellowtail. We did see a few yellows out about 30 feet past where the best caster might put a jig. Those yellows must carry range finders or somethin'! We had a nice flurry of bonito in the morning and got bit on both bait and swimbaits! A bunch of legal barracuda got busy in our chum line in the later afternoon which, as you would expect, made short work of the jackpot. Caught the cuda on bait, swimbaits, and jigs.
Had a quick trip back and arrived at the dock around 6pm.
Good boat, great crew, productive fishing ......and fun group!
