I am one tired SOB today, hiked 4 miles up to Sand lake yesturday and caught Grayling as fast as my fly hit the water. They are a very pretty fish. The trail was a lot steeper than I remember it last year, or maybe I am just getting older.

Sounds like fun! I need to get up there and try for those little elusive buggars. What flies were you using to catch them? Thanks for the report James.

How was the trail? Had they cleaned up the fallen trees? and was there still snow up that high? I love to fish those lakes, the fish are so willing to come out and play. I'm not sure if I will make it up ther this year or not. It seem like that hike gets steeper and rougher each time I go. Chicken.

I'd love some more info on this place. I've been thinking it would be fun to get some Grayling, if nothing else for the pictures and bragging rights.

THAT IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO HEAR. DID YOU JUST FISH FROM SHORE? IS ALL THE ICE OFF OF THE LAKE? ANY GOOD CAMING SPOTS UP THERE? I LOOK FORWARD TO MAKING THE TREK AND ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Only a few trees in the way and one to crawl under. Up higher the trail gets muddy in areas. Take plenty of water for the hike in but when you get to round lake there is a spring on the east side, it tastes good and it is cold enough to make your fingers numb when filling a bottle. I did all my fishing from shore and didn't have to move very far from were the trail comes in on both lakes. Slapping the fly on the water when I cast out brought the Grayling in to check it out. My boy caught some Cutts on a gold spinner at round.
What always suprises me about that area is how clean it is for as much use as it gets and there is some nice camp sites at round lake did not see many at sand lake.
