Finally got a day off and decided to try out rockport for some perch...
I started fishing about noon in one of the inlets near the dam, I fished w/ a jig and a piece of worm for about an hour or two, without getting a bite. Figured I'd drive to Echo and see if the action was any better there.
It was[cool]
Not sure how to describe where i was fishing - You all probably know about the smaller body of water 'attached' to echo. There is a drainage pipe that runs underneath the road. I fished the point off of that.
Anyways, caught a 2lb bass on my first cast - and things only got better from there![sly] Ended up catching two small perch - (which absolutely tickled me because i figured they were all but extinct in Echo)
I was in my float tube just going up and down the point casting towards the rocks - Using a purple jig tipped with worm. In the three or four hours i was there i probably caught over 50 bass. The majority of them being over a pound. With the occasionaly two pounder. I had two or three break my line (I always fish with ultra-light rods and 4lb test - Keeps things interesting). Also lost a monster, when i first saw this fish i thought it was a big brown trout - it looked way too long to be a smallmouth, the drag sounded off and he was gone - but the next time i got a view of him - sure enough it was a big ol' smallie. I'm guessing he was three or four pounds, he got off though[].
All in all a good day of fishing - The action was so fast at echo it made up for rockport being slow.
I've fished echo for 5-6 years now & I've never seen the bass fishing so good - Might try getting up early and catching some of the big trout being caught there, then heading out for bass when the boat traffic picks up
