Remote and Tiller Control Outboard / Electric Lake Report

I finally broke down and purchased a small aluminum fishing boat so I can give the wife a break and take the kids fishing with me. It has a steering console, and came with an old Evinrude 18 hp 2 stroke that can be used with either tiller or remote control and it only takes about 30 seconds to do the conversion. I think I would use the tiller more for trolling, but the steering console would be great at times especially when fishing alone. The 18 horses is too fast for trolling, so do any of you know of a 9.9 hp outboard system that can be changed from remote to tiller within a couple of minutes, without any tools? Any information would be greating appreciated.

Oh ya, the fishing report. Hit electric lake this weekend. Caught a bunch of minnows in traps, and about as many 14-16 inch cutts. Kids enjoyed tending the minnow traps a lot more than the fishing for trout. Used a good half hogie bun for minnow bait. Don't use the $.80 hotdog buns, they fall apart and the minnows feast without having to enter the traps. One red sided shiner was pushing 5 inches in length. Never seen one that big. Fished minnows from a floating bobber as well as a slip sinker setup, both did equally well. Great to have the kids catch something other than planter rainbows from shore, I think they appreciated the beauty and size of the cutts.

How do you know that 18hp will be to fast to troll with?By time you add all your tackle ,gear,gas and people on board ,you might find that it will be enough weight to slow you down enough.

You have several options to slow down.

1st, and maybe the best, is to backtroll. This requires no additional cash outlay and gives you absolute control when following tight contours with the tiller. And you can slow to a crawl. You'll get wet in rough water without WaveWackers, and you might not be able to go fast enough. This is ideal for slow, precise presentations.

2nd: get a trolling plate. It will slow you down all you need, though you lose some steering control when it's down. It pops up and out of place when you want to go fast. Pop it down and troll away.

3rd, get a trolling or drift sock. Kind of a pain sometimes but very effective. Also works to stabilize the front of your boat in windy conditions.

Have you thought about buying a eletric motor I have a 14' alumium boat w/9.9 evinrude motor but I troll w/my eletric motor they cost $100.00 at sportsmans sounds like that would be the way to go if I were you it would save you alot of money more than going out and buying a 9.9 gas powered motor. Also those eletric motors are so quite it make the world of diffrence.
