50 at Strawberry
#1
the ksl microcast says that the temp at Strawberry is 50 degrees today. Guess I won't get my hopes up about getting back up there again on sat.

Why not? A couple days of 50 degree wont do much to the 6" cap other than melt what little snow is on the ice and create a little surface water to slip and slide on.. 50* equals shirt sleave weather on the cap,,,sweet!!
I'm hoping to be there Satuday,, and Sunday too if I can swing it, LOL!~

I'm with Coldfooter on this one -- I wish I were there today, what a gorgeous day outside and I am stuck at work. Oh well, it looks like my day will come on Monday.

[cool]As coldfooter said, cfoodluvr, no worries, mate. The fishing should be good, and the ice will still be safe, so get on out there and have fun! Let us know how you do. I'm either going there or Rockperch on Saturday a.m.

A bigger concern to me is with all of the snow that has been falling up there we will have a slush problem. Hopefully, the ice got thick enough first that it will not happen, but I have my doubts. I am buying me some snow shoes tomorrow so that hopefully from now on I can walk on top of the deep snow and slush, rather than through it. That 10+" slush at Huntington was an experience that I hope to never repeat.

Sounds like really good fishing weather! Seems like each December we get a little "heat wave". I've seen the lower elevation lakes take a hit from the warm spells, but I'd bet the berry will be safe for a while.

A couple of winters ago, there was a stretch of about three weeks where the daytime temps at Strawberry were in the high 40s to low 50s, and the nighttime temps were near zero. It was great. The ice was hard as a rock in the morning, and just a little wet in the late afternoon. It is only that warm for a few hours, and after the sun goes down, you've got about 16 to 18 hours of freezing temps. And you'd better have sunscreen when you're up that high and with that much sun.

Keep in mind that it isn't quite that warm up there either. I use the actual weather station data vs. any of the "weather reports" from the local weathermen.

At the Daniels/Strawberry divide, the high is only 40 so far.

Yes but with any luck that snow is now slush and with a couple clear nights its tanlines on the hard deck[Wink]

I was hoping this would be a "I caught 50 fish today at Strawberry report. Oh Well!

F4F- I was wondering if you really trust the temps from that mesowest station. I have found on the days I have actually been at the lake the temp has varied quite widely from that web sight. I know the station is located on the hill side over looking the marina. On sat when we arrived at mud creek at 6:45 my truck temp read 2 degree's (I tend to trust it). When I got home that day I pulled up the website and it said the nightime low was like 15 degree's (don't quote me on this...If my web connection wasn't so slow at work I would pull up the last week's data and get the real number). But anyway I have found it to not be very accurate compared to my actual readings at the lake. What has been your experience? Anyone?

The weather station at Daniels Summit is a great tool, but isn't a good indicator of the temperature at the reservoir. It is near the top of Daniels canyon, and is affected by the rising air coming up the canyon. I've driven by there, watching the thermometer on my truck and noticed that the temperature there is almost always a few degrees different than the temperature near the water.

I fished the Berry last night from 9:00 pm till about 5:00 am. There was a little slush but nothing to worry about. We fished at the marina where there was a good 7-8 inches of clear ice. I caught 24 all within the slot, my brother caught 14, one of which was 22". Three other friends came for part of the night and each caught about 8. We fished in 30 feet of water and caught fish at all depths. It was a blast. Nothing better than spending time with good friends and catching 2-4 pound trout through a hole in the ice.

I don't rely on them for exact temps, but more for the high/low since midnight stuff. Those generally seem close. Good point, I need to start paying a little more attention to it. I guess I've always preferred the weather station data to the news versions.

I have written a web application that does temps for a client based on XY coordinates. My app is very similiar to how KSL's works. When you type in Strawberry you are actually returning a XY that goes and checks conditions. Depending on the scale of the map they use, your temps can vary greatly. Say a XY falls into that zone and it's 50 degrees. Now if the zone is 40 miles by 40 miles, you can see it might not be accurate for one spot on the earth, but a great average of that large area. Now if the zone is 1 mile by 1 mile... and your XY falls into that, well, you get the idea or I'm boring everyone to death! [pirate]
