very tough, I got lucky a few years back ice fishing lincoln beach and caught a 13in. largemouth. I was using a size 10 hook and 1 single wax worm and a bb split shot about 15in above the hook.
I seen some other one's caught out there on sonic lures. not sure about the smallmouth, I think they head for deep water though. I've seen sm in 40 to 50 feet of water in Oct. in deer creek on a aqua-vu before, we couldn't get them to bite just the perch. later chuck [signature]

We caught LMB at Mantua Saturday on a tear drop tipped with 1/4 of a crawler.

The first thing you need to do is find a body of water with a high population of bass. By doing so you get bass that are in high competition for food so they feed more during the winter. We used to catch dozens through the ice at Newton before the summer kill during the drought. We would find them at medium depths from 5 to 15 feet. We would use slightly larger jigs than we used for bluegill but the same bait of waxies, maggots, and crawlers.

All the times I have caught bass through the ice it was by pure chance. I'm not sure I have ever heard of people consistantly fishing for and catching bass throught the ice. The ones I have caught have been when I first drop my jig through the hole. All fish caught have been right off the bottom. Use traditional ice fishing gear tipped with some type of worm or milly.

Thanks for the ideas. My fishing bro's wife insists that if he keeps going fishing he has to bring home a few bass. I told him I'd see what help I could get.

Where were you Don? My boy and I didn't get there until around 10:30 am. The fishing was slow for us (only caught two perch), so he entertained himself by building a couple snowmen near the docks.

Well we started the day along the south end maybe 200 yards west of the creek. We finished the day on the far north end, farthest group north.. At one point there was 6 of us in the area, we were the last two to leave the north end..

Are you saying youn want to keep the bass..... If so I won't tell you because ..
1 the state won't plant bass if the lake gets fished out... 2 that is about all I fish for and if you take them home that is less I can catch or fish for.... . [signature]
