I had the pleasure of fishing with Bear Lake Mack today on Bear Lake. Couldn't have asked for better weather in the middle of January. BLM knows how to fish Bear Lake, and he is a talented and patient teacher. I caught 4 lakers, with the largest going 4.5 pounds, and one tagged (my first) cutthroat trout. I lost two really nice fish (probably in the 8 to 10 pound range), both a result of not following BLM's advice (drag too loose). BLM caught about a dozen lakers and one cutthroat. He caught several lakers larger than mine, with the largest going around 10 pounds. I have never been into fish of this size, and not been fishing in salt water. I was amazed how we could hook a laker, reel it in for 10 to 20 feet, have it get off, and lower the jig back down and hook them a second and third time. We also snagged some cisco on the rockpile; however the cisco run is just beginning, and they weren't having any success dip netting them in the Utah State Park when we left. BLM reeled in at least three fine rocks from the rock pile, and had a couple others get off at the boat! They didn't put up much of a fight, but they pulled really hard!
With the fine education I received from BLM, I definitely will be spending some serious fishing time on Bear Lake in my boat this year.
BLM, thanks for a day on the water that was undoubtedly better than I could have received from any paid guide.
