I have caught a lot of smallmouth bass but i was wondering if anyone could tell me why some of them have red eyes. in the same lake i have caught some with red eyes and i was wondering if they are maybe males or females. can anyone help me out. any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks and good luck fishing. trfishin

Depending on the age of the fish and the time of year. Eyes vary in color with these two factors.

I seem to catch more smallies with red eyes when the water is colder, but only out of certain lakes. I used to think it was their diet but not sure now. Good question trfishin.
