Proposal Would Open Experimental Salmon Season On Penobscot River

AUGUSTA, ME-A stretch of the Penobscot River near Bangor, Maine, could reopen to salmon anglers this fall for the first time in seven years. The Atlantic Salmon Commission (ASC) announced that it will hold a public hearing later this spring prior to a final vote on a proposal that would establish a "limited, experimental open season" on salmon from below the Veazie Dam fishway to the Penobscot Bridge between Bangor and Brewer, Maine. The ASC voted earlier this month to move forward with the proposal for the one-month season that would begin September 15. Anglers would be allowed to catch and release up to two salmon per day and would be restricted to using flies with single-pointed, barbless hooks. ASC members say a hearing on the limited fall season proposal will likely be held in late April or early May.

I heard several years back maine was attempting to rebuild thier salmon fishing.

what I saw was a documentry stating that the problem was caused by a breed on non reproducing planted salmon. something to do with less than satifactory hatchlings.

the show went on showing that the new plantings were actualy planted in egg form and firtilized in the river as aposed to hatching them and bringing back as fingerlings.

I am happy to see that this method is showing promice.
