Hi guys I am new to this site, it looks great, I fish fresh water most all the time only fished salt a few times, I am on the largest body of fresh water in the world, I fish for whitefish mostly, but do get my share of walleye's and lots of salmon and trout jack's.

I like this site ive been reading it and signed up, I dont spell all that well and I dont puncuate at all hardly lol after time you will be able to tell I spent most of my time sleeping in english and spelling class lol BUT give me a spool of 2 pound test line and the fish are introuble.

I have fished out of the same boat for 20 years and its hauled tons of fish in id have to say, if I am not hunting or fishing I am stuck at work lol

I fish the east end of lake superior and the sainte mary's river system, its as good a fresh water fishing a man can find, I am looking forward to talking with some of you fine folks, Y'all have a great day.

Hi and welcome aboard. We have a few more members here from the Mit as well. I have only been through and over it many times. I did get a chance to fish Huron a couple times.

We do look forward to your fish reports if you would like to share them with us. We also have a Michigan board as well as a board for for every state.

Once again, Welcome. If you have any questions or any advice, please feel free to post it here. We can all learn from each other.[cool]

welcome aboard! do you fish for a lot of salmon up there? ive heard that the same tactics that work well on the great lakes for salmon will work for kokanee salmon here. if you fish a lot for salmon i wouldnt mind hearing about some of your favorite rigs! again, welcome, and i look forward to learning a thing or two from ya! and dont worry about the spelling and punctuation- theres more to fishing than spelling! take care, bkidder

bkidder, I target 2 and 3 year old salmon, most of what i catch are in the 1 to 5 pound range, I fish in 10 to 30 feet of water in the spring, infact I will be fishing in prolly less than 2 weeks, you can troll with bout any type of spoon and get them, cleo's seem to be as good as any thing, you can long line or down rigger fish.

How ever my favorite way is to fish with a 11 foot noodle rod light action, with 2 pound test line and a gob of spawn on a #12 hook, i just use a 3 foot leader of 2 pound test, on top of that i use a 1/2 ounce slip sinker and drift that down the edge of the shiping channel in bout 14 to 30 feet of water.

fishing this way I get a number of diffrent types of fish, I get coho, chinnock and atlantic salmon, jacks as we call them also get some steelhead this way and steel head jacks, I also get limits of lake whitefish this way.

I do fish fall run salmon but not much, when the bigger salmon are hitting, I am spending all my time with my hounds after black bear and if I fish that time of the year I am incline to be after walleye.

if you guys need any info on some thing, just ask me and if I dont know its only a short phone call away, I know most all the good fishermen in these parts.

the ice is bad here now, I would recomend staying off the ice, or useing a airboat.

have a great day.

sounds like you catch a lot of fish! thats interesting that you use 2lb line. do you find that the fish cant see it as well, or do you just do it for the increased sport? do you ever use flashers and squids or anything similar, behind a downrigger? i know how you feel about hunting- starting in the middle of august i start deer hunting. i miss the kokanee and the macinaw spawns, but its hard to get away from big game hunting!

bkidder you hit the nail on the head with the 2lb line, the whitefish are very line sensitive and it adds sport to the salmon jacks, as with any young trout or salmonjack they tend to not hit on lines heaveyer than 4lb test, what i call tow rope 10 pound and up, you will be lucky to catch a fish where i am at, maybe a big northern if your baited up for them.

as for all the flashers and the rest of the gadgets on the down rigers yes we use it all, some times they want it all flashie and some times they dont, the lake trout like it flashie, but i hardly ever get after lakers.

one of my fishing buddies is on his way out here as I right this we are getting my boat out today and start getting the ole girl ready, should be on the water in just a week or so, just waiting for ice to get out of the way, I will post some pictures when I get out, of what I catch for you, happy hunting/fishing and have a great day.

hey thanks a lot for the info! maybe i'll have to try some lighter line when going after kokanee salmon. i'll give it a try in a few weeks. good luck when you get the boat out on the water! im looking forward to seeing some pics.

i know ive asked you a million questions, but i have one more. what do you use when you go after lake trout?

i really appreciate you answering my questions. good fishing, bkidder

bkidder no problem with the question, this is what these message boards are for.

as for lake trout, I have prolly cault most of mine vertical jigging, through the ice, I use a 1 ounce jig, if in over 150 feet of water just a little bigger jig is all and i use cut bait, I take a smelt and dress it up to look good and bout 4 inch piece of it, some times i use a whole smelt, then I just bounce the jig off the bottom and raise it up a couple feet and lower it, bounce it off bottom, then rip it up a couple feet fast, just keep it up some time you get them and some times you dont, when the ice is good, I will move around some, just to try to get on active fish and some guys will spray some wd-40 on there bait, some feel it helps, i have tryed it and dont see a diffrence.

hey i sure will try to post pictures when i get out, I am not the best at posting pictures, some web site I dont have any trouble and the next i just cant lol may be you could walk me through posting pictures here on this site and I will see if I have any thing from last year to post, for a test run.

hey I have one question for you, where are you from?
Happy fishing.

Hi and welcome to Big Fish!

I am a new member as well and have really enjoyed my time here so far!

I love to bass fish and have discovered that there are many local fishing groups around. You might check in your area to see how many there are. It is fun to be around people that enjoy what you do and the environments are usually quite laid back. Some of the groups even have their own tournaments!

Good luck!
