Fishing of Dams
#1
I just recently tried my luck fishing off of a local dam by my house and almost caught the biggest smallmouth bass of my life (24+ inches) on a leech. I also caught an array of large bluegills, smallmouth and large mouth bass, and walleye. I just casted out into the current and retrieved my bait slowly. Does anyone else fish off of dams? If so what tactics do you use and what kinds of fish do you catch?

Hey Logan,
I don't fish off dams but I'm sure someone else does here. I just wanted to welcome you and if there's any questions you have don't be afraid to ask. These people here have a lot of knowledge and love to share. Hope to see you often, tell us your stories and if you have a little trick, we like to learn too.

Logan,

I am not sure how you had your line rigged up in the first place, but when I fish rivers here in Minnesota, especially by a dam. I use shallow diving rapalas and miscellaneous topwater baits for fake baits. When I use live bait, I use a big floating jigheads with a sinker tied 3-4 feet up the line.

Thank you for the warm welcome Vinny. I generaly dont use artificial lures, i mostly uses live bait. Leeches and large shiners seem to do the best there. My line is the simplest you can get it. A hook on hte end of the line with 2 sinkers 18 inches above it. I just cast and retrieve slowly after the current catches it or suspend it over the side of the railing. Your idea of the floating jig sounds very interesting, i might give it a try today if i go.
