[cool][#0000ff]Thought I would share these links to some video clips of bass fishing. They were posted by Zonker, over on the tubing board. Great stuff, showing how bass hit different kinds of lures. A real "eye opener" for bassers who wanna know what's going on down there.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Very observant young man. The way bass "inhale" a lure sometimes does not produce the "whack" we associate with a strike. In many cases we just feel some back pressure...a "rubber band" feel. Before anglers learn to set the hook everytime the feel changes they will miss a lot of strikes.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I am a diver as well as a fisherman. I have watched fish underwater and have seen first hand how they take those lures, like in the videos. When I tell the fishermen above that they have been missing strikes they tell me I am full of it.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Bluegills are probably worse than bass for being hard to feel sometimes. That is especially true when you are fly fishing. The gills will swim up behind the fly, at the same speed, and suck in and spit out the fly before the angler even knows they are there. Unless you can watch them, or unless they are hitting aggressively, they can be tough.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Yeah, I thought those videos pointed out some good stuff. Definitely makes ya wonder just how many fish you miss, never knowing they hit your lure.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]On many trips I probably look funny because I set the hook on nothing but water so many times. But, I often hook fish that others might miss too. One of my favorite sayings is "Hooksets are free".[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Big bass in Mantua are always tough. They have plenty of food so they are not desperate. When they do come out to play they go right back into the jungle as soon as they feel a hook. You need 50 pound line and a bit of luck to bring them in...usually with about a bale or two of hay on their faces.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As the water cools the top water action should pick up. Find open areas around the edges or big holes further out and work them with poppers or buzzbaits. That usually produces better in "low light" periods...early in the morning (sorry young man) or just before dark.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Otherwise, stick with your drop shotting and reapers. Tough to beat on Mantua, or most other lakes.[/#0000ff]
