are those my only choices? how about annodized chartreuse? or blued? or gold? or fluorescent chartreuse and orange? or fluorescent pink? hooks come in a variety of colors for a variety of uses.

I use em all, they all work best in the proper situation...picking one over the other would be a travesty, IMO.

So true. There are lots of colors available. And as we all know, fish are picky when they bite. They want one color one minute and suddenly quit biting on that color, you switch to a different color and they start biting again.

I haven't experimented with a lot of colors yet but I do tend to stick with what the majority of the packages are... using red once in a while.

As far as I can tell, red hooks are only effective in clear water from 2-6 feet, beyond that they don't appear any different than any other hook, and in muddy or extremely turbid water, or for fishing the slop - they don't make one bit of difference...after all, are we trying to cause a reaction to the hook, or the lure?

[font "Poor Richard"][green][size 3][cool]Well actually I was trying to be funny. Guess that comedy should be left to the professionals. [Tongue] However, on a serious note a bright lure works well in clear water whereas they say a dark lure is more suited for murky conditions. But then again I wouldn't really know since I am not a fish. How much difference the color of the hook makes is probably a moot point.[Wink][/size][/green][/font]

I can tell you this much about the color of a hook, they catch more anglers than fish....

I have used old rusted hooks from the bottom of the boat when I couldnt find anything else, the fish dont seem to mind.

now ask about the different modles, circle verses octopus verses long shank snells verses crome, stainless, varius coatings the list goes on and on and on. but remember to ask which fish to use it with... or how to present it...

ofcorse one could ask if their mother-in-law's blue hair would make good flies [angelic][sly] Just be carefull collecting them when the brush runs out, remember to grab only one at a time or you will wake her while she is snoring...[shocked]

I have never had a problem with bronze colored hooks, and I have used red as well.

I have never used blued hooks, though I have used other blue terminal tackle, as well as brass. Given those circumstances, I will usually go blued.

I agree with you dave, I think all the mumbo jumbo with hook color is more to catch the angler than the fish.

Lets not loose focus on what REALLY catches fish:

proper lure choice based on local forage, size and color

presentation

and overall luck

Without those three key elements, all the different color hooks in the world won't catch you any fish. Keep in mind also, what did anglers do before different color hooks came out?

One thing I will say about some of the unique colors is it makes it easier to see to tie the line to them. My eyes are getting worse with each year, and it's really easy to thread the line on a chartrues or red hook. I buy them just for that purpose, and that purpose alone.[cool]

before steal and the comming of the white man to the american continants, my ansestors used to pride them selves on having a good squaw,

they would use small rabbit rib bones and a Squaw with a good head of hair could tie up a couple peices of bone to be used for ice fishing. Tipping it off with an offering of a small peice of elk, moose or bear. (yep, there were more elk than deer back then) one can only emagine

out west the plains indians just speard the fish, they didnt have time to sit around and wait for the fish to bite, if they did they would loose track of the buffalo heards.

now the eskamos indians used seal bone, and again a prize squaw was some one to sit around the igloo to chew the fat with. "bigger hook because of the bigger fish" but mostly spears...

I myself have caught fish on just a split shot sinker, no hook, the fish would grab ahold of the sinker and not let go... so yep luck in timming is a big thing. being lucky enough to be there during the feeding frenzy you can even catch them with your thumb like o'l Little Jack Horner... I have the scars and a pick of a pike I caught throgh a hole in the ice as proof...[shocked]

I have heard of hand carved wood hooks, but have yet to see one.

the moral is, if you are out there at the right time you can catch them on anything....
