Boilless at Willard 8-31
#1
Well, with all the reports of boils lately, I just had to get out and give it a shake or two. Let me just say, the cold front really scattered the fish! We roamed around the lake for while looking for boils (never fished one before). We found the occasional diving tern, but couldn't locate anything that even resembled a boil. So we settled down close to the rocks and just started casting into them. We did manage to boat a few fish, but nothing stellar. I would imagine another day or two of stable weather will get them all fired up again. Nice evening on the pond though. We talked to several groups at the cleaning station, and they seemed to just be getting a few fish. The most any group had seemed to be 8 fish. Everyone said it was an off night. Just my luck, a day late and a dollar short! Sure beats work though.

I was also out last night. I have not had much chance to get out to Willard this year and wouldn't you know it I got skunked. It wasn't much of a fishing trip cause I was trying out the new boat. The guy I bought the boat from was showing me all I needed to know about it and then we trolled around for a bit.

All well now I got a boat big enough to take the kids out in.

Good luck all.

Sorry to hear that you didn't catch 25+ fish, but a few Wipers is still good.

I think you're right... as soon as the temp stabalizes, and the water temp starts dropping off, both the wipers and the walleyes at Willard should be very cooperative. [Smile]

The boat is real nice for what I paid. It has a new interior (seats, carpet, and top). It also has a straight six I/O, and a 9.5 horse kicker. The boat is a 19' 1970 glasspar. I know the last two owners so that is nice being it is my first motor boat besides my little 12' with a 5 hp motor.

We were there in the C-Dory and caught 11 wipers, trolling. Caught 2 big channel cats while trollong 5 feet deep in 20 feet of water. I was surprised. Only a hint of boils. We left at 6 pm and everyone was still watching for boils. Not bad fishing but I love the boils. Only caught one casting.
