Any tips for storing my rods and reels for the winter?

I use those long, elongated, U shaped hooks that are coated in plastic, from HomeDepot. They screw into the rafters and wall studs in my shed and the rods are out of the way.

i like to bring them indoors and put them in a nice out of the way spot. on the reels i usually grease them, and then put a light coat of oil on them. (then stick them in an out of the way spot) by taking these steps with my reels i can be sure they wont have rust on them come spring. the biggest worry for me, concerning my rods, is that i dont put them somewhere where they will accidentally be broken!

I have the exact same set up as gdn. I have hooks screwed into the roof of my father in laws shed. They hang up there out of the way.

I also like to take the face off of my reels, wipe them out, spray them with carb cleaner until shiney clean, then pack them with a heavy grease like wheel bearing grease. Vasaleen works perfect because it repels the water. I do this with all my reels, everything from my abu 5500's to my Penn 114HLW's. I've NEVER fouled a bearing, melted gears, or broken a face plate due to a reel failing. (unless I pushed the reel past it's limits) Also, WD-40 works great for cleaning the faces and creates a protective coating on the outside of the reel. NEVER use WD on the inside as a lube. WD-40 attracts dirt and grime and thins when in contact with water.

I store mine indoors, usually in my basement, but in the house at times as well.

[black]I store all of my stuff in my house. For the rods, I have some Berkley Verticle rod racks ( I got them as a close out for $2.99(regularly $9.99) so I picked up for of them - each holds 6 rods and reels. I think over all, storing them inside keeps them in a little better environment and I get to tinker with them more. [/black]

[black]How many rods and reels do you need to store ? How much room do you have to store them ?[/black]

[black]As was mentioned, a little off-season maintenance will make your equipment last longer and work better. Just try to not overdo the lube job on your reels. Especially, be care using WD40. Don't let it get inside the gearing and interior lubrication. If it come in contact with the grease inside your reel, it will change the viscosity and make the stuff run into your drag washers and that will make your drag slip (if you have fiber drags on your reels, it will also mess them up).[/black]
