Arrived at the lake a little later than origanally planned (8:30 A.M.) My oldest son and my oldest grandson accompanied me. We were set up a little before 9:00. We immediately started catching fish. The schools would move thru and we would pick up fish. By noon we had iced between 60 and 70 kokes ranging in size from 10 to 14 1/2 inches. We returned the smaller fish. I kept twelve fish that ran from 11 1/2 to 14 1/2 inches. There were a couple young lads and one had his son along (10 yrs. old) fishing 100 yards from us who were not catching any fish so I invited them over to fish with us. They had never caught Kokes thru the ice and they had a ball once we showed them how to set up and how to fish for them. The youngster, Tyler, said he had never had such an exciting time, I luv to see the kids catch fish. These guys were from the Logan area and said they fished it in the summer but not much in the winter. I'm headed back up again this comming Friday if anybody is interested in joining me let me know.[cool]

Nice report PF, sounds like you did your good deed for the day by inviting those anglers over. Were you fishing the same spot as last time?

Actually we were in deeper water, about 100 feet. This was the first time we got into a few of the larger Kokes. Should be a good summer on the pond.[cool]

Great report! How was the road from the bottom of the dam up the hill to the top? You mentioned you were out over deeper water but how deep were the fish? Thanks

What made the difference in catching the Kokes? Why didn't they catch any? I have never tried to catch them through the ice. I wouldn't know how to rig for them either. Do you jig aggressive or dead stick? I would image the Kokes like it moving. I would love to know how to rig for those guys.

Usually with kokes, they will hit whatever you drop if they are in heavy.

For all the people that sent me PM's to inquire about our tactics on catching the Kokes. All the fish we have caught this tear have been in the top 20 feet or so of the water column, it hasn't seemed to make any difference if we fished 60 feet or 100 feet of water. We had them jump out of the holes again Sat. during the feeding frenzy. The guys from Logan couldn't believe it when they saw it happen. We are using what has been my standard Koke rig for years and that is a Kastmaster with a 10 inch dropper to a pink Rat Finkee tipped with a waxie. Once the bite starts you don't need to tip the jig. With the two pole permit I dead stick one rod and jig the other, doesn't seem to make much difference when a school comes by of which one they hit the best, but we did notice the bigger fish seemed to be a bit deeper and liked to take the jig on a slow fall. I don't mind sharing this info on the web because years ago when the limit was 24 Kokanee I've seen up to 150 to 200 people on the ice. It helped the fishery by thinning some of the Kokes that in turn resulted in larger fish the next year. I'm not a biologist and I'm sure some people will find fault with that statement but I know what I have experienced thru 30 plus years of fishing Porcupine. Now's the time to grab a pole and have fun.

How is the access to the lake?? Can you make it in a car or is it 4x4 only? I may stop by on the way back from BL tomorrow afternoon.

Is there a way to get a snowmobile on the ice up there? I'd like to give it a try since it's been years that I was last up there.

I can make it all right, just need to set up a meeting location. I sent you a PM, did you get it?
Slimerslayer- If you have a snowmobile, you won't have a problem getting it on the ice, you will have to drive it past the dam a few hundred yards but it shouldn't be a problem. You could even follow the road and go to the back of the lake without any problem as long as you have a snowmobile, not sure about taking a vehicle past the dam.

I'd be carefull trying to get a machine on the ice this weekend as Porcupine is bad for the edges getting bad in a hurry during warm weather. I'm headed up Friday and plan on taking a ladder to get on if needed. I have used ATV ramps in years past to access the ice with my wheeler. I usually don't take a machine to Porcupine as it's a small lake and you can walk all of it pretty easy.
