Has anyone ever used Pike for bait?
#1
Don't jump the gun here guys because it must be legal in Canada. I got these pictures today and thought I'd share, for those of you that haven't seen them yet, enjoy.
This 54", 44lb Northern was caught in Rainy river, Canada. The guy that caught it was reeling in a smaller pike, 36 inches, when the larger fish took it. WH2

So, how did the larger pike get hooked? It looks like the only hook is in the smaller pikes mouth, or was there a trailing hook as well?

That is amazing! I would be thrilled to catch either one of those fish. And to answer your question, no I have never used pike as bait but I did have a huge brown try and take a planter rainbow I caught. He struck about ten feet from shore, however I wasn't able to land the big brown. He darted off the second he saw me.

Awesome pics. What a fish. I cant remember exactly for sure, but it seems to me that this was a picture posted earlier from some place in Europe...? Not sure, but I am sure someone else will chime in here about it. Wherever it was caught, I wish it was me and at the end of my fly rod at the view! Jake

I have done a fair amount of pike fishing up north and now for a fact that it is a common occurance to use pike for bait. Usually it is during ice fishing and they use a decoy that looks like a pike. When a bigger one comes and grabs it they drop their bait in hopes it will come back.

From what I read, the big fish hung onto the little fish until they had it in the boat, that is all I know. WH2

I know people that have had the same thing happen, except the larger fish was not hooked, it just didn't want to let go. They just netted the bigger fish as well!

I had something similar happen some years ago in Washington state. I hooked a 12 inch rainbow and as I was reeling it in I saw a very long, around 36 to 40 inches, fish come out from a sunken log and make a bee line to the fish I was reeling in. It looked like it swallowed the fish but I wasn't sure the bigger fish was hooked. The fish headed down stream so I had to do something, as soon as I pulled back on the rod the lure came out, bummer. At least the guy in the picture got his, LOL.

I have seen this phenomenon happen many times at pineview. The tigers will snatch up a perch or crappie when the fish is almost to the bank. I have seen many people land them like this. The tiger swallows the fish and the angler gets lucky and misses the teeth.

Nice pictures.

That little thing, of a bigger fish eating a littler fish on the line, is called hitch hiking. Big Ling Cod have a habbit of doing it. I've also had walleye, large mouths, tiger muskie and others do it, too. As a matter of fact I caught my biggest fish, a 50# Ling Cod, off a situation just like that. He bit a 24" Ling I had coming off the bottom to his gill plate and refused to let go. It's an awesome thing to see happen.

My little brother had that happen up at pineview once. He said that he would of liked to see how big the Tiger was casu it hit the Crappie like a freight train.

"Swallows" is the key word. My clan stem from MN and I've caught slimers, Walleye, and yes Pike by them swallowing a smaller fish I've hooked. But the Pike in the picture only has the dink in its bill, not its throat.
Agree'd,, that set of pictures have been around the web a couple million times and the story changes again and again..
MHO,, the story is BS..

I have targeted Pike more than any other species. They are some of the best fresh water game fish to be had. Of course in my opinion, you have to head north to have a true northern pike experience.

I have also seen some big pike slam birds, ducks, mice, and other pike I was catching. One of my favorite lures is a baby duck lure. =) (sorry PETA lovers).

The first picture is definitely true. However, if you look closely at the big pike eating the smaller one, it is definitely not the same pike as the guy is holding in the boat in the second pic.
Take a close look, and you will see what I mean.

Cool pics though!

I've seen this at Fish Lake while fly fishing for rainbows. While playing a small rainbow on a fly rod, a large lake trout came up and took the rainbow. The biggest problem with something like this, is how do you hook the larger fish? Needless to say, the lake trout wasn't landed.
