Ok, Looks like with all the video postings being added to BFT, I'm going to have to upgrade from my dial-up modem to a high speed connection.
My question is: Which provider do I choose?
I live in the Salt Lake Valley, and would like a provider that supplies Virus scan, firewall, as many bells and whistles as possible.
Any information that you could provide would be helpful.
Thanks

I work with computers and networking gear and I get this question all the time. What it boils down to is whats available in your area. Not all neighborhoods are wired for, dsl, cable and digital lines
a good start is Broadbandreports.com use the prequal and find out whats available. Also lots of local reviews
DSL (Qwest) a good choice but does requires a phone line. It dosent tie up your phone but if your like me and don't have a regular telephone then you have to add in the cost of a land line. Also depending on how far you are from the CO (Central Office) Is going to depend how fast your internet connection is. The further away you are the weaker the signal and slower your connection.
DSL also needs gateway its usually grouped with a another company like MSN or Earthlink. Basically your using Qwest lines to to get to the internet but MSN to access the internet. setup is faily easy
Cable (comcast) is really fast, 3mbps alone, grouped with cable tv 7mbps, and burstable to 12mbps with power burst. Those are advertised speeds but Ive never reach those speeds on the average ive only gotten 1 to 5, no phone line required, and dosent matter how far you are from the CO. But it is pricey and does require a coax jack in your wall (round cable jack like the one in the back of your TV) Comcast will install a jack for a small fee setup is pretty simple.
Wireless (Digis) Digis is based out of Pleasant Grove Its basically a radio tower broadcasting an internet connection to small dish mounted on your roof, monthly costs are similar to cable and advertised speeds of 7mbps which is comparable to DSL & Cable. Digis is a good alternative if DSL or Cable is not available in your area but there is a installation cost and if you don't own your home you'll need to get permission to install a dish on your roof. The dish is approximately the same size as your typical dishes
Theres a few others Digital carries out there but these are the three I would reccomend Im currently using Ygnition Networks its been goods so far but only been with the for a few months if you have any question free free to ask.

Have had good luck with Comcast for 2+ years. With any provider, just don't download anytning as viruses are eveywhere. At work we have Direct TV satelite it works good to. Same thing don't download as we have prolems with downloads thru Email. Good luck. They all work just as fast as the other its a matter of cost.

If you live in a city that has UTOPIA (fiber to the home), I would go with XMission over UTOPIA. DO NOT EVER USE MSTAR THOUGH!!!!!
They have the worst customer service of any company on the planet! They also have all kinds of technical difficulties.
Xmission, on the other hand, has been fantastic. I get 10 Mb/sec up and down for $40/month. I LOVE IT!!!

Sorry but it had nothing to do with the browser but everything to do with undependable service. I seems like Comcast has had a service man stationed in our parking lot for the last several months. You just never knew if you were going to be able to get on or not.

i set up qwest DSL a few months ago, for what you do at home and surfing the net it is fine. i can download anything i need to in a matter of minutes. unless you are planning on performing some kind of web design i think DSL is great, i would look into higher speeds for manageing my own web site or something it would just make the "uploading" to it from the pc faster....save your self some green and go qwest, i pay for the phone and DSL 50 a month. the phone is digital with voice caller id, and waiting, the dsl package i got sent me a modem, install software, and when i had issues setting it up i got people on the phone right away that totally reset all the IP address stuff and that in simple step by step walk through fashion. they were great and really helpful right away. for my cable comcast is the worst company to work with for customer service, if i could get a dish ( i rent) i would...but as it is i pay the 14 bucks a month for the stooped basic analog signal with some local HD brodcasting for my LCD. if i had a choice between comcast and someplace else for cable...i would find someplace else i am not impressed with comcasts lackadasical attitude and their lag in correcting errors...to the tune that i shut them down at my house for 3 months while they got the correct credits to my account, i was billed for pay per veiws i dont even have access to. i dont have the box just the wire they told me i ordered them with my remote...sha right. nuff said.

Comcast, hands down. I use it a lot and I mean a lot. Both my wife and I work from home, have 3 lines using VoIP on a consistent basis, and have plenty of bandwidth to spare. I had problems up until I got rid of their video service; it seemed being at the very end of their line and having all of their services was a recipe for disaster. Here is an example of their speed from a fresh speed test. I wish there was more upload speed but for home use it is screaming.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 10116 kbps (1264.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 716 kbps (89.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I agree with Catman Xmission is a really great ISP (completely forgot about them Xmission) there right here in SLC and do provide good service & support.
Mstar... is that the one that has ties with LDS church ??? If I remembered correctly they contract a company out at the international center to do all there support and yes do provide lousy support.

[black]I have used Comcast for a few years now and they've been pretty good. Any time I've had interruptions in service, which is rare, they will adjust your bill, no questions asked. I just pinged my line and the results were:[/black]
[#cc0000]1740.6 Kbps [/#cc0000]
[black]Not too bad! I'd recommend them and I have no plans on changing though they aren't the cheapest ISP I know but the speed is GREAT![/black]

You can call comcast every six months and threaten to cancel and get a new promotion we pay $19.99 month now. Have never had to pay full price.

I had the BlueZone for a couple of years, and it was great. Its wireless (line of sight) from your roof to the point of service and hardwired into your house, $21/month was .5Meg downloads and $29/month for much faster, you can put a wireless router on the line into the house to be a0lbe to hook online anywhere in the house. I didn't do that but friends from work had the same service and they paid for the faster speed to be able to hook up more that one system without noticing any slowdowns, they also give you free webmail account up to 5 mail boxes, we loved them. But we thought Comcast sucked because their TV service gave us lousy reception even after the dug up the backyard 3 times to replace the cable, and it didn't help or even made it worst, they never were able to fix it, and weren't nice when we tried to get them to fix it, so we told them to "pound sand". But the Bluezone was great.
