Willard Bay - South Marina
#1
For those of you who like launching your boats at the south marina. Yesterday, I took the parks 16 foot Aluminum with a 30 hp into the marina without any problems. I actually drove it right up to the concrete ramp and never touched. I also was talking to the manager about launching boats out of the marina and was told as long as people use the middle and north ramp there should be no problems. If you launch from it, you just want to go directly north until you hit the channel and then go west out of the marina. If you try and cut the corner you may hit bottom. Also, I did talk to a guy who launched about an 18 foot ski boat and he said he also didn't have any problems. So have fun and good luck on your next outing.

If the water were only about 25 degrees warmer...and if it were JUNE instead of APRIL...

Thanks for the report. I've never done well at Willard before June and have made a silent oath to myself that I will just avoid Willard from now on till June 1!!

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

Why would you even risk a lower unit for a fish? But if you want to I would disagree with you NETO about wanting it to be June instead of April. Yeah, the fishing may be better in June, but dont forget it will be 100 degree's too, which means the water level will be down to about................MUD!!! Because we all know how bad our drout (spell check) is around here. Point is, it is a shame to see what is going on there, hope they get the dike fixed quick, because you know all the skiiers, tubers, wakeboarders and such are just going to pile up onto Pineview and then we will have lost two fisheries!!! Just my four cents........errrrrr.........two cents!!!

From what I have heard the fix this year is just a temp fix. And than they are going to fix the entire Dyke next year. I also heard that they were going to let it raise about 3 feet and try to hold it at that level all summer so it may not be mud but ya never know.

Just so you know, the repair was finished over a week ago, so as the run off begins we should see a raise in the water levels[cool].

Thats great!!! Now are they going to let all the runoff go into the lake or is it just the 3 extra feet that everyone is talking about? If it is just the extra 3 feet that they were going to initially let in will that survive the summer heat? Just curious, wouldnt mind fishing it this year, but like I said before I am not going to risk the lower unit of my motor to chase a fish with so many other places around!!!

Yup, I've thought about that too. We lose 2 fisheries this year. Willard and Pineview! Nobody on Willard because of low water pushes everyone to Pineview.

I'm not sure where you live Justin but for a lot of us Willard is the closest lake around and the only lake in Northern Utah that has wipers and walleye. So is it worth it for me to risk dinging a prop, you bet it is. But then again I've been on the lake when it is a lot lower than it is now and have a good idea what areas to avoid. For those that don't want to risk dinging their props or damaging their lower units, I say that is fine, more fish for me to catch[Wink]. Yea, Pineview is just as close but those big old tigers don't compare to the fight of a wiper(pound for pound) or the taste of a walleye. Of course this is just my opinion and I sure don't blame you if you don't want play at Willard this year. Unless they have changed their minds, the three foot raise is all we will get this year if we even get that much, that snow is sure melting fast. You are right about the water level dropping as soon as the farmers starting drawing on it to water their crops. Fishing it early in the summer will be a must for those that don't want to risk damage to their props. If the water level does go up three feet that should be more than enough for anyone to launch though. WH2

I live here in Roy, so not too far from Willard. I am going to have to keep an eye on Willard as far as the extra 3 feet, maybe I am just a wuss, but like I mentioned before I dont want to even risk a prop/lower unit. I have only taken my boat on there 3 times, so I am not too familiar with it. As far as the farmers drawing their share of water, why cant they (or do they already) just take it out of canal that brings the water into Willard? Or even from what comes out of Willard rather than straight from the lake? I do agree with you about the Wipers being a good fight and I love me some Walleye, so maybe if it does go up three feet I will venture out there, very slowly though!!! Maybe I will just sneak onto someone else's boat[Wink]!!! Thanks for all the input.

As long as there as is still snow melting, the farmers do take the run off water before it goes into the lake, that should last until June or so, but after that they take it out of the lake. Some of it is held in Pineview but that is mainly for the local cities use, secondary and culinary. I'll let everyone know as the water level rises and as it starts to drop again but the lake should be fishable for most of us until Aug or so depending on the heat.

Thanks for the info WH2...............what does your boat look like again? When will you be out to Willard next? Do you leave it unattended at any point during launching?[sly] HAHAHA just kidding, hopefully I will make it out there once or "thrice" this year. I am just trying to make up for last year. I spent the whole entire summer in Iraq, so no fishing for me last year, but I am going to make up for it this year even though it will drive me to the poor house!!!!

they only use the water out of willard when all else is gone mainly echo and rockport. the pumps at willard havent been used in quite awhile.water has been pouring in for the last week and a half hopfully 3 or4 feet will float the docks. my guess is 3 feet will get it to the bottom of the rocks on the dike.

Hey, I didn't want to start a fight about Willard just wanted to give you all an update. Anyways, also just to let you all know 3 feet and thats it. They have said no more. Some have also said we would be lucky to get the 3 feet, NO SNOW. I will tell you though from what I saw, the south marina would be my bet tp launch. I used a telescoping pole and never even touched bottom until I was in side the cove area of the marina. Hey, it was just a heads up.

Thanks Jeff, I'm hoping to get the big Crestliner back this weekend, but as of Monday mine was still behind a couple other boats and Cal(Robertson's Marine) said he would try to get at it. Nothing big, just having the 225 Evinrude serviced and rear livewell aerator fixed. I appreciate you keeping us updated on Willard, Thanks again.[cool]

I agree with you about messing up your prop but i usually troll willard or jig. I am going to hit willard before i leave on my vacation in may so hopefully there is a little more water in it.Also i am waiting for the water temp to go up a bit since it is a 2 hour drive for me i have to make it worth the trip.

This is going to be interesting. I never really thought about the impact this will have. Is it the lesser of 2 evils sending them all to PV or is that the worst case scenario? I love both waters equally. Will i have to sacrafice tigers for wipers? Maybe so. I will have to make up for all the tigers i catch with some fat wipers and eyes. Hopefully willard will be stellar this summer.[cool]

Hey Jeff, no worries here, just trying to let trout slayer know the lastest news and the facts about launching at Willard when the water is low.
Brody, it all depends on how hot the summer is, if we get rain a few times a month we should be OK, if we go for a month or longer without it, willard will be in trouble. I've never seen PV get low enough to effect launching but low water does stress those musky[unsure].

I was actually talking about the boaters and pwc's. I know how the water will affect the fish. I have seen that plenty.
