San Diego Tuna Fishing Need Advice
#1
Were headed down to San Diego to go tuna fishing early next week. While I've been before, I got skunked last time while my son caught the largest on the boat. The california boards are pretty slow...so I thought I'd ask if anyone had some tackle tips they might share for tuna fishing. I need to know what tackle I should take and how to rig it up for best results. Thanks for any information you are willing to provide.

How many days ? What boat ? This would be my questions, for the last 25 years my Wife and I have been going on 10 to 24 day trips. Be ready for anything, keep a fresh bait and don't be afraid to let your line out further than they ell you, most of the bigger fish are on the outside of the school. Also when not trolling use worm kings or rubber fish when boat stops on trolled fish better than bait the majority of the time. I have caught more big fish like this than on bait.

20, 30 and 40lb rigs would be most effective in the majority of cases. Don't go cheap on the line either. Good terminal tackle is a must.

What kind of gear do you have now??[cool]

We are only going for 1 day on the "Jig Strike". We are all landlocked fresh water fishermen, so we are really novices when it comes to salt water. What are worm kings and rubber fish? Last time we went they provide live sardines or ballyhoo, and that's all we used.

[black]On a one day trip this early, you'll mostly be targeting chickens with an occasional blue fin in the mix. Learn to throw chovies on a 25 lb outfit. Anchovies are candy to albacore but flylining them takes a bit of practice. You should be able to cast 50-70 feet with nothing more than a live bait hook and a pinhead chovy. Longer, supple rods help. If you're using rental gear, I'm sorry; none of it is made to cast worth a crap. [/black]

[black]6" swim baits with 1-1/2 to 2 ounce heads are great for fishing the slide on a 30 lb outfit. Blue and green colors work the best. I doubt you'll want to throw iron but it can be very effective sometimes.[/black]

[black]If you start jumping kelp paddies, have a few in-line, 2-4 oz sinkers, preferably chrome dipped. Tie them on with a 6' leader and a sardine and sink it fast. It's a good technique to pick up yellowtail that go deep when the boat pulls up to the paddy.[/black]

Worm Kings, Fish Traps, Blams, Big Hammers are all brands of plasics swimbaits. They come in tons of different colors.

$7500 PER PERSON all meals and drinks, no booze or beer seperate tab. You can bring your own but the fishing is too demanding to get buzzed.

Shouldn't need anything bigger than 40 lb, but you never know. Rent some poles, just don't lose them. Your probably going for yellowtail and yellowfin and some bass.

[black]Yellowfin this early? I thought they were later season when the warmer water comes north. Don't they start showing up about the time you start seeing exotics?[/black]

Unless the tuna show up this week you will get skunked again fishing for tuna. Right now there is a hot bite at the coronado islands for yellowtail and barracuda. The fish might be getting a little line shy by the time you go out. I wouldn't use a line bigger than 30 lb.A quality 6 ft. rod and a high speed real for throwing iron. I like the blue/white and scrambled egg colors for iron. Fly lining a sardine for the yellows is really fun on a hot bite and the cudas teeth make it a bit more difficult. I am on board the pacific queen that leaves san diego memorial day night for a two day. I was hoping the albie's would show up by now but thats not looking to promising. The most impotant thing to remember is to have fun and don't get discouraged, its fishing in a lot bigger lake.

It looks like they are catching some yellowfin tuna. I'm going to take my biggest rods, and probably rent a couple as well in case we get into some bigger fish. I know those rental rods have like 40 lb test line. I'll have to get some lighter weight leader and some weights. What size hooks does everyone recommend? Circle hooks? Swivels? weights? Thanks for all the good advise so far.
