Sorry about being a day late.... some four letter word thing called "work" got in the way! Hit the water about 2 PM and headed over to the NW side. Water temp about 62 degrees. Decided to try for some trout rather than walleyes at this time of day. Trolled some #5 shad raps in silver/blue/orange combination and picked up several nice fat troutskis - about 14 to 17 inchers in pretty short order, trolling over about 40 feet of water. Much to my surprise, we then picked up about a 16" walleye trolling in the same place - around 5 feet down over 40 feet of water. Hmmmm - maybe i have been fishing them wrong all these years? lol. I figured this was a sign the old walleyes were on a pretty good feeding binge so I rigged up a slip sinker rig and crawler harness and started tossing it closer to shore and bouncing it back out. We ended up picking up several more walleyes - nothing big but all yummy eaters. Kept 4 trout for the smoker and was so pleased to see the nice deep red meat when I filleted them. I was expecting the usual pale pink "planter" meat. Total count for the day including the releases (not the ones that released themselves on the way in []) was 15 rainbows, seven walleyes, and a pretty good sunburn!
Makes me wish I would fish Deer Creek more often but I refuse to fight the skiers/boarders later in the year. Even that night, there were maybe a dozen boats on the whole lake - only 3 were skiers - and I still had them coming within 100 feet of me at full speed. Too bad they can't restrict wakeboard/jetski/skiers to just 10AM to 6PM like I have seen in other places to free up the morning and evening for just the fisherman! Anyway, enough complaining. It was a great day on Deer Creek.
