Difference in "spincasting" and "casting" reels?
#1
I have a rod that was purchased new some years ago. I never used it. It is what I think is a "casting" rod, whereas the reel would be top mounted and there's a finger hook on the handle. The guides are also on the top of the rod.

I've long used a spinning rod/reel by tradition, but I'm curious what place a "spincasting" or casting reel would have in general lake or stream fishing? Whats the difference between the two? I fish from both shore and boat/canoe.

If I can find a place to use this type of set-up, I will purchase a reel for this rod. Thanks for the help!

Welcome go BFT and thanks for the question.

It sounds like you did find a baitcaster rod. You will notice a difference besides the trigger (1st indicator) but also the first guide is rather small compared to that of a Spinning rod.

The type of casting is totally different from spin casting and baitcasting. It takes a lot of practice to overcome the factors of getting the line where you want it and not getting a backlash or Birdsnest.

What brand is the Rod that you found??

We might be able to give you some pointers on whether it is worth investing in a reel for it or if it would be better to sell it to a friend.

Unless you are a Bass fisherman, it would be hard to convince you of the pros and cons of that rod.[cool]

In general, a bait caster reel has better drag for 2 reasons on the spool is inline with the eyes of the rod there is no 90 degree turn so it comes smoother off the spool, the 2nd and kind of related item is there is no bial to rub the line on, which only makes a diference when you keep reeling when a big fish is taking drag,,,you see this commen mistake especially with kids the fish is taking drag and they keep cranking away on the handle, the increased friction (heat)if kept up will soon seperate the fish from the rod by braking the line at the reel. Bait casters are a little tricky to learn but once mastered they are less likely to bird nest ( the kindaof bird nest that shoots out the eyes, dont get me wrong try to cast a baitcaster and let the lure wrap around something on the boat and its a different kind of birdnest)on the cast due to line twist like a spinning reel does. Thanks for the replies. Although I've fished off and on since my early teen years, I became semi-hardcore at it a few years ago. I bought a canoe and did a lot of lake fishing with a trolling motor. My wife and I have a larger family and the children just enjoy the sport.

Unfortunately, I left the hobby go for a few years due to a busy work schedule. I recently decided to pick it up again, and started going through my collection of equipment. I found this rod... its a Cabela's model IM7 or something like that. I think its about 6' 6" long or maybe 7'. I bought a lot of Cabela's combo's and I think I bought this rod bare with the intentions of using for cats or something.

Looking to once again enjoy the hobby, so if a baitcaster would work for lake bass or cats, maybe I'd be interested.

Basically I use baitcasters for everything except trout and panfish fishing.

I third that notion. I only use spinning tackle for the smaller species of fish that require the use of lures of bait too light to cast with a baitcasting style reel. The only exception is in saltwater, by which I use a larger spinning reel for bait chunking to specific species. But, the reason is still the same as the baits I chunk are too light for a baitcasting reel. [cool]

Thanks for the replies. I think towards the summer when we get out on the canoe more often, I'm gonna outfit that rod with a baitcaster. At least I can try it. What to loose? I have 5 small boys who will use the rod one way or another.
