[left]The Mrs. and I set out to find calm seas today, the first in a long time. The trip was nice and smooth and we set out to find some kings, dolphin and some bottom fish. The first hour we trolled with some of Manns 25+ stretch lures in the Mahia color on one and the red and white on the other. We purposefully left the Taco outriggers at home as it was just the two of us and we had enough reels to man by ourselves. We started in 40' of water heading north out of Sebastian Inlet. Trolling at 4-6 mph and was seeing baitfish (mullet) schooling but as we approached they would sink down and disappear.
Suddenly the red and white bait got smacked and it learned first hand, why they call em "smokers", the reel was screaming even though I had set a moderate drag before we set out. 10 minutes later the Mrs. had landed her first King and the biggest fish of her life.
The King scaled out at 15 lbs when we got home and measured 38".
The odd thing was it had tail hooked it self when it smacked at the bait. Good reason for it to scream the line off, and created a difficult fight. Yet the Mrs. had her plan. She mentioned watching the fishing programs and how they reeled in the fish, only reeling in when the fish wasn't pulling line out and she methodically took that King to task. I’m real proud of her!
When we stopped fishing for the kings we came in to 30’ of water and caught a mess of Whiting and had them for supper! The Kingfish fillets are waiting for another day. The dolphin will wait for another day as well.
We only used 15 gallons of fuel and had a good day in my opinion even though a fella with New York License plates hit our trailer with his boat as my wife was waiting in line to pull me out of the water at the ramp. That person had the nerve to not only hit my trailer pole the first time but when they backed up and tried it again they broke the upright pole because he didn’t have the skill to drive around it. The Mrs. gave him her nickels worth too. She’s a career truck driver and has put more 53’ trailers in spaces where you wouldn’t think they would fit and did it without damaging anything either. The pole got minor damage (PVC) yet she told me the pole scratched his boat up real good, and then when he backed up trying to miss the trailer again he scratched his boat up some more. PVC poles I can replace but he will have to remember those scratches on his boat for some time to come. She couldn’t be faulted for that, she was parked and waiting in line to get to the ramp and the guy was antsy to get out of the ramp, serves him right! Damn impatient folks. You get what you deserve…..
