Buzzbait, Spinnerbait help
#1
Hello everyone!
I am relatively new to spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. I always stayed away from them. I am a flyfisherman so when I picked up a spinning rod setup, I went right for the rubber worm and texas rig, and a hugh fan of the kastmasters, because that is what I know.

Recently, a friend of mine and I saw several bass fisherman using spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with great success. We naturally went out and bought a couple of different ones. A quick question on how to fish these lures, is it a topwater lure that should be retrieved med/fast? Do you fish them just below the surface? or can you bounce them along the bottom? We had zero success with these, and I just can't blame the arrow in this instance, it has to be the Indian.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

The most important thing for me on a spinnerbait is that it doesn't roll over (turn sideways). The right weight, speed, and blades will assure this doesn't happen. I know of a couple good articles that are to the point and not trying to sell you anything, I'll see if I can find them for you. Spinnerbaits have an infinite number of ways to use them.

Simple rules. Spinners go from slow to medium. Drag at all levels of the thermocline.

Buzzbaits are usually a fast retrieve along the top.[cool]

And the buzzbait seems to work best right at dusk or dawn, rip those bad boys on top water in the shallows. You'll think someone threw a bowling ball in the water when a big bass boils up on a buzzbait [cool]

You'er a little early here in the NE for useing spinnerbaits. I'm surprised you saw someone catching fish with them at this time. I like to see the water at least 70 degrees before I throw one, but thats me. They should be bedding up your way at this full moon and holding near or on the beds. Crankbaits are my favorite tool at this time.

I was pretty amazed to, that in NE they were catching them. I was catching bass too, but on Senkos. It was the first time I have ever boated out onto the Quabbin and was really impressed.

Thanks for the help! I picked up a couple of more buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, so we will see how these guys work out!

in order to fish a buzzbait you have to find the right tempo of your retrieve one day the might hit it slow others fast, work them around submerged shallow structure and weeds, i like the green yellow pattern, trying to mimic a frog.
for spinnerbaits as others said should wait until summer months, slow roll around deep and shallow structure, its mostly a learning experience and just learning from what you have done well in what situations, im only a junior in highschool but ive found over the past couple years its good to expand your knowledge and knowing how to fish a buzzbait and spinnerbait in go to sitiuations is a must. Let us know when youve got some good news

In my opinion catching bass on a buzzbait is the most fun way to do it. Unless you are in a tube then it really doesn't get any better right TubeN2. Like others have already said mornings and evenings are great times to throw them in the summer.

The tube is good. I do prefer the tube for morning fishing of Bass. I would rather fish them from the shore in the afternoon.[cool]

So why do you prefer to fish from the banks in the afternoon?

It is all about the migration of the Crawfish,Crayfish,Crawdads or what ever way are most comfortable calling them.

In the after noon, the Crawdads go towards the bank to take advantage of goodies that are pushed to the edge. In the morning, they go back to deeper cooler waters.

Therefore, when you are Bass fishing for LMB in the morning, you can use the craw imitations. Cast to the bank and pull to the depths. In the late afternoon, from the bank, cast to the depths and pull to the bank.

Same pattern as the Crawdads. Am I making sense??

Why do you think that the Bass in crawdad infested waters go deeper as the water warms up?? Because they are following there food down there too.[cool]

I've had my best success with spinnerbaits in colder water around 60 degrees. Prespawn bass love them. Keep them near the bottom and always use trailer hooks.
