I'm glad Old Coot dug up that old post. My opinion now is exactly what it was when I posted in that thread also. I don't think it makes any difference at all, but if anything, a full or new moon might even make the fishing a little BETTER.
Just for the record, I went out fishing this last Friday (which was during a full moon phase) with Old Coot and Bait Caster, and we had a MUCH better than average day! Randy [signature]
I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing. Then I retired. Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

As far as trout go I wouldn't worry about moon phase...enough said.

I have kept too many records over the years to dismiss what a full moon does to lake fishing for trout.

I have to agree with you PackFish. I haven't noticed much of a difference with other species, such as crappie, tiger muskie, and smallmouth. But trout who call a lake home ... I feel it does make a difference, although it varies as to the severity. We went out on 3 full moon phases for trout since July, and all 3 trips failed to live up the successes / quality of fish we caught on trips to the same waters a week or so later.
But like the man said, "Just go fishing!" [signature]

[cool][#0000ff]Asking that question to a group of diverse anglers, such as we have on Utah BFT, is like asking "How high is up"?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Everybody has their own personal opinion, based upon their own personal experiences, but those opinions are all very subjective. There are no two fishing trips in which ALL the other conditions are exactly the same, so you cannot really form a definitive opinion that will hold up on all future trips. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]While moon phase can be important for some species, especially during the spawn, it often does not have nearly as much impact as the other factors. There is always the question of water temperature (rising or falling), water clarity, availability of food, current feeding schedule, water activity during daytime hours (power squadron), etc. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Of course, the biggie is are you fishing in the right place, with the right bait or lure, and making the right kind of presentation? I am amazed at times when real dimbulbs have been doing everything wrong, don't catch fish and then try to blame it on the weather, moon phases or the fact that their brother in law is a jinx. On the other hand, anglers who know the water well and know how to catch the fish there, can go out about anytime and catch fish...even under conditions that has everybody else smelling skunk.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The only thing I can honestly say about fishing under a bright moon is that it makes it easier to see things in the dark. I tend to cast up onto the bank a lot less when I can see it easier.[/#0000ff] [signature]

Many other factors than the moon influence your fishing to a greater extent. But the moon is a factor on trout on a lake.
I started keeping track of this back around 81 ( fly fishing only) and have come to the conclusion that it is a factor that needs to be taken into account. I don't believe much in luck. I figure if you consistently catch fish under adverse conditions it's because you put in your dues and and kept track of what was going on. Now years ago on Lake Eire fishing for Walleye off the reefs under the full moon was a different story. And when I say the moon does effect trout fishing on a lake I am talking about the smaller lakes not the gorge and I am referring to day light fishing not under the full moon. [signature]

[cool][#0000ff]I would never say NEVER. I too have experienced the effects of the moon on specific species on specific waters during specific times of the year. Once you get the pattern, you can usually count on some measure of success if you play it right. And, if you don't, you can count on going fishless. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]My only point is that it is difficult to make broad generalizations. There really are a whole lot of things...both big and little...that can mess you up just when you think you have everything all figured out.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]No matter how long I fish, and how much I think I know, the fish always find a way to make me humble.[/#0000ff] [signature]

[black][size 3]Just from my personal experience and opinion, I think anyone that would back out of a fishing trip because of moon phase or barometric pressure, is someone that really didn't want to go fishing anyway.[/size][/black]
[size 3][/size] [size 3]Confucius and Saber say: If man goes fishing only to catch fish, he is missing half of the experience and joy of the outing.[/size] [size 3][/size] [size 3][/size] [signature]

I dont think anyone is crazy enough to back out of fishing because of the moon light, and I don't see any where that it has been said that someone would do that.
It was just a topic that seemed interesting and I didn't realize that it has been hashed out already. Oh well. [signature]

[#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]There are probably no REALLY NEW topics for discussion here.
