Want more whirling disease?
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Interesting [url "http://www.sltrib.com/outdoors/ci_7582459"]ARTICLE BY BRETT PRETTYMAN[/url] in the Tribune this morning. Seems that one of our state legislators, from Kanab, is introducing a new bill to require DWR to buy trout from private hatcheries...with relaxed restrictions on testing for whirling disease. Isn't that how we got this problem in Utah in the first place...thanks to the Leavitt family?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]In light of some of the other discussions we have been having on DWR and changing regulations, I loved one paragraph from Brett's article:[/#0000ff]

"Pretending to be concerned about the average angler in Utah is a nice ploy, but it's the job of the state wildlife agency to decide what's best for the resource."

Yikes!!![pirate], what an idiotic thing to do. Maybe if these private hatcheries hadn't already given this state the gift of whirling disease, this proposal could be seriously considered. Besides, say what you will about the DWR, but they do already have a very good coldwater hatchery system that does a lot of specialized work for specific bodies of water (IE: Strawberry). A private hatchery likely would not be able to do these types of things as well.

If one of these struggling fish farmers wanted a sustainable business arrangement with the state, he should consider developing a good WARMWATER hatchery and sell (certified disease free) catfish and bass to the state. It has been discussed at length that the DWR DOES need a new warmwater hatchery.

The stupid thing about this new legislation is that the DWR does not NEED to buy trout from private hatcheries. Currently, the state hatcheries are growing more than enough trout for the needs of the state...especially with new and rebuilt hatcheries. It sounds to me like one legislator is trying to find a way to mandate the state into lining his own pockets with money...

If these private hatcheries are hurting they should get together and sue the Leavitt Family for the economic damage they inflicted on the hatcheries. The State of Utah should probably doing the same. Maybe a class action lawsuit because many other business could probably make the case that they where harmed as well.

From reading the thread, I got the impression that a few people misinterpreted the quote TubeDude posted from the Tribune. In the article, Prettyman was referring to Aquaculture Association pretending care about the state anglers as a ploy, not the DWR.

[cool][#0000ff]Right you are. Still a good quote and descriptive of the attitude that DWR sometimes takes...not always. We should be fair about it.[/#0000ff]

I had already read the article. My point was they shouldn't be forcing diseased or potentially diseased fish on us. However I can see how they and many others have been harmed by the unethical actions of another. They should attempt to recoup those losses from those responsible instead. It's pretty obvious to anyone that read the article that the Aquaculture Association is only interested in the short run bottom line.
