[cool] [#0000ff]We all like to learn about new species. As a little exercise to help keep our minds on fishing and not on the weather this week, I am hosting this little fish identity contest. Actually, it would be fun without any "cheesy" prizes, but I will put up some stuff from my own stash. The winners can have a choice between a BFT flag, a hat, or a 2XL BFT long sleeve shirt. Or, I could also put up a dozen assorted ice jigs from the new batch I am just finishing up. Grand prize winner chooses first, and the next three in order take what is left.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]GRAND PRIZE: First to guess all ten correctly.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]SECOND: Second to guess all ten correctly...or to guess the most without being 100% correct.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]THREE: Most creative guesses.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]FOUR: Best answers to the last two questions.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]RULES: Keep answers brief. Name the species, by number, and give a brief comment to verify that you know something about the fish. Example: #1 sabretooth wiper from the toxic waste pond off I-80. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Make your first answers count, since no "edited" responses will be eligible to win. You may be elibible for winning, even without answering the final two questions at the bottom, but that is what will make this fun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Correct answers will not be identified until the contest is over, after midnight on Friday Dec. 7'th (Pearl Harbor Day). Winners will be announced on the following Monday.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fire up your search engines and dig out your Bill Dunce books.[/#0000ff]

I suppose I don't have much of an imagination because all I could think was that none of them would survive in Utah to answer both questions. Either the winter would kill them or they would eat everything in the lake and die off. The Zander probably has the best chance of survival.

[cool][#0000ff]Uh oh! Now you're gonna get some smack goin' with the bassaholics. Of course I realize your comments are all in fun (maybe) but those folks can take things serious.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Anyways, I'm not sure that Nile perchies would want to bother with the stickery spiny critters in that lake as long as they have so many soft, slimy, gullible and nutritious troutskis to slurp.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Okay, winners have been noted within their posts. That was easy because everybody wimped out and there was not much action. I don't wanna hear anymore about "Let's have a contest."[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Icing Perch has already chosen the dozen jigs option. Other winners (proline first) can choose from the BFT flag, long sleeve shirt (black or white) or BFT hat. I only have one flag but I have extras in the other goodies.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just in case someone else wants to trade their prize for a dozen new ice jigs, I can make that work too. Got a grundle of new stuff.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Send me a PM with your choice and your mailing address. If you live in the Salt Lake area and want to come pick it up at the tackletorium, that's cool too. Saves me postage. I'm kinda cheap.[/#0000ff]

[cool] [#0000ff]Hey Cliff, you should be penalized for being in Mexico anyway. And you are whining about missing the silly contest. Sheesh.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Okay, just for you. Here is a single fish. Name it and tell something about it...and why it should or should not be in Utah waters. HINT: It is already in several places in the US and is scaring fisheries people to death.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I would dearly love to be a part of the shindig for next year, but we have too many other plans and not enough time or money to do everything we would like to do.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have fished several lakes in Mexico. Some are fantastic and almost unspoiled. Others have become over commercialized and/or overfished by the local commercial interests who do not realize (or care) what the tourist dollars can do for them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Even worse is the crime problem for some of the little lakes close enough to the border for anglers to drive to. Lake Angostura, south of Douglas AZ was such a lake. No huge fish, like El Salto, but hundred fish days of 3-5 pound fish are common. For many years it was a quiet lake, reached only by driving on some "rustic" roads. Popular with small groups who would travel in caravans and set up their own little fishing villages on the water. Then things changed. Bands of robbers would swoop into the camps at night, armed with automatic weapons, and would steal everything they could carry off. They also brutalized the people...men and women. After one AZ bass club had been hit twice in a row, they quit going and spread the word for everybody else to stay away. Gringos can't bring guns into Mexico but the criminal element down there has plenty of them.[/#0000ff]

[cool] [#0000ff]There are some burbot-like features...the wierd tail and all. But, that is where the resemblance ends. The fish in the picture is the giant snakehead, and has been found in California and several other states...along with the smaller northern snakehead. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They are originally from China but are found in much of Asia, and are a prized food fish among many Asians. That is how they got to the US...illegally...by suppliers to the Asian seafood markets. They fly them over alive, since they can live out of water for up to 3 days...by breathing air if they have to. They can also walk across the ground, like the walking catfish. They have been "bucketed" into several watersheds either by aquarium owners whose fish outgrew their tanks, or by folks who wanted to set up a source of future supply.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They are not a fish you want in any water with your favorite species already there...because they won't be there much longer. Snakeheads have a mouth full of razor sharp teeth and they can take a bite right out of a large fish...or human...just like a shark (see attached pics). They do not allow other fish to live in their territory...killing them even if they don't eat them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I already had these pics set aside for the contest but chose ten of the other species instead. Then, I recorded an hourlong program off the National Geographic channel on "Fishzilla"...the snakehead...and thought it would be a good add-on.[/#0000ff]
