Auger Blade ??'s
#1
I know this topic has been thrown around before but I could not find the thread.
I need to sharpen my auger blades. Is there someone in UT county that I can take them to or is it worth it to buy a blade sharpener?? I was going to buy a new set of blades for now but wanted to hang on to the old ones.
I have seen some different sharpeners @ SW and Cabelas but wondered if they are worth the money and do they work??

I would just buy new ones. If you change the angle on the blades even in the slightest, you'll have the auger spinning on top of the ice.

Just too much hassle IMO. [cool]

I have had good luck sharpening my Mora hand auger blades using a coarse ceramic 'crock stick' that came in a knife sharpening kit. Remove the blades as you only want to sharpen the top (as you drill) side. Hold blade in a vise or clamp over edge of a bench. Draw the crock stick across and along the beveled edge. Watch that you are exposing fresh surface equally and fully along the beveled edge to ensure that the original angle is maintained.

I have one of those plastic handled sharpeners. It works fine. If you've nicked your blade on a rock it won't help but if they are just in need of a touchup they work great. I run it over the blades each day I fish.
I also replace my blades about every 2 years.
