Fishing Report - Minersville, Yankee Meadows, Baker Dam Res - 4/12/03
#1
well i got to minersville at about 10am, it was warm but the wind was blowing 20 mph steady - 30 mph gusts, went to the park-east side- near the dam, i tried spinners, spoons, flies, jigs, . . nuthin . . lost 2 wooly buggers, a daredevil spoon, a mepps, and 2 jigs . .lots of snags and rocks . . .decided to try the west side . . .

wind kept blowin, decide to quit around 2, then realized i was parked in some loose deep gravel, i guess this was underwater a year ago, got stuck, tried everything, got stuck worse, hiked up the hill (20 degees uphill !) to call AAA, the local guy knew right where i was, and in less than an hour and my wallet $60 lighter, i was on my way to yankee meadows . . .

its a little early to get up there but after sticking the car i was game for anything . . saw a guy coming back down the mountain, he told me he saw a hona civic up there, so off i went up 5000 feet . . .i know a guy that likes to fish there with a honda, so i thought id hook up with him . . .first 2000 feet no snow, then next 2000 feet - a lot of melting snow making the road muddy - but its a hard packed road - no problem - last 1000 feet still has 1 or 2 foot of snow in the road - my hyundai was bottoming out in the snow with me in the 4 x 4 ruts - but i made it - not too bad - oh it was soooooo beautiful, god i love it up there - and STILL TOTALLY FROZEN WITH SNOW ON TOP !

the edges looked like they were kinda soft, but id say we got 2-3 weeks still before fishing this paradise . .

so back down the mountain i went, i had about 3 hrs of daylight left so i hauled it to baker dam reservoir - it wasnt so windy there, alot of people out . .

i fished right at the bottom of the hill when you just get there - no luck for about an hour, tried rainbow rapala, mepps, vibra, powerbait, nuthin . .. switched to a chartreuse/yellow flourescent jig . . .got lucky with a 17 inch brownie!

i lost 6 or 7 more jigs trying do it again . .nothing . .tried same color with a mr twister jig, nuthin . . .lost a couple of those too, but the guy fishing next to me with his son borrowed 6 jigs from me cause he didnt have any and he caught one too!

so that was it, one fish! oh well, at least i didnt get skunked and i made it home alive . . . total miles: 525

Nice report southernman, a lot of driving for one fish. It's lucky us fishermen don't measure our success by the number of fish we catch. I've been to Willard six times this year and only have two wipers to show for it. Nice pictures also. WH2

Southernman,
Sorry to hear that Minersville was so unkind to you! My fate would have been similar yesterday, but my nephew saved the day. I was planning to fish Scofield one more time, He went early, and called me on his way home. Not enough open water to worry about, but still enough ice on the north end to get out on. I stayed home and worked (I can say that word here right?) in the yard.

heck after looking at your pics of Minersville the water looks clear [shocked]actually it stays pretty murky most of the year with visability to maybe 3-4 feet. Ice fishing along the dam it is quite clear and you can sometimes watch the fish hit your lure. And as far as wind thats just another normal day there

It's awesome ya made it up to the Yank I was in Garts friday talking to a guy from Parowan and he said last he heard you could lony get just above the new camp ground.

Sorry ya got stuck and had to pay$$$ I was home ya should have given me a jingle

I fish Minersville on thursday with no luck.

I spent this week searching for some good fishing. I went fishing Friday after school and all day Saturday here's the guess, 200+ Rainbows, Browns, Cutbows, and Brownbows.

I was definately blessed with what my friends call old derek luck. I guess they were mad because I had a bit or fish with every cast. Some guy from Summit was fishing next me with the same fly and only caught 1 all day. I felt bad because he tried and tried. Well, I don't know very many people that can keep up or challenge me with numbers and size of fish.

Just a little bragging.

P.S. I do have my off days. Fish need to heal. LOL

I was lucky i was doin about 61 or 62, its posted 55 . . he prob gets people doin 80 easy down that hill [shocked]
