Grand Rapids Report 1-16-08

The DNR Report for Grand Rapids says waters levels are going down. Umm... I DON"T THINK SO. Whoever made that report is nutts. The water level is highest I've ever seen it. Wading out to the main bowl is impossible. The east side rocks are completely underwater. Most anglers are fishing from shore and those wading out are only able to go 5-8 feet from shore. Water levels are just to high and the current is extremely fast.

The good news is people are hooking fish. I say "hooking" instead of catching because the fast current is making it very difficult to land fish. There were 5 of us out there fishing and there were 12 "FISH ON" calls the two hours I was there. Out of that 12 only 2 were landed. (One walleye One Steelhead)

when michigan dnr says water levels are low, they are refering only to the great lakes.. it has nothing to do with inner lake and river levels.

as for you noting water levels being high, I can say the same thing about the huron river system on the east side, Hamburg was about under water due to the two inch rain we got on top of the frozen ground. this made for a water shed that filled all the low lying areas... The waters are receeding back twards maintained levels...

I did hear that the dam was completly under water last week , any truth to that rumor ?

No the main 6th street dam wasn't underwater. I doubt that would ever happen. If it did most of grand rapids would be in serious trouble. Down river a hundred yards there are 3 more breakers. 2 of them are about a 2 foot drop the other about a foot. All of these are underwater and that is mostlikey what you heard about.

Sounds good to me. Hopefully by then the water levels will go down and we will actualy be able to get out there and fish. Just give a few days notice.
