Bear Lake Fishing Report Friday 2/22/08
#1
Went out to check on some fishermen and the ice thickness off the Ideal Beach/Gus Rich Point/rockpile area. Ended up fishing for a couple of hours. Started in 37 feet right on the rockpile. The ice was at least 12" thick. Caught 6 whitefish (only one "keeper") using a small, silver castmaster tipped with a salmon egg. I put on a larger jigging spoon on another rod and tipped it with cisco. I ended up catching one small (3lb or so) lake trout. The anglers around me were catching a mix of cutthroat and whitefish and a I did see a few nice whitefish that were caught. Just before I decided to move out deep, I had one more hit. A 14" perch! I usually see a few perch each winter, but I haven't caught one in two years. Anyway, it was kept for dinner along with the one whitefish. Released the laker. I moved out to 90' of water and ice thickness was over 10". I fished deep with tubes/cisco for 45 minutes. Nadda. I called it a day. Nice sunny weather in between snow flurries. The ice was really talking today. It was -2 this morning and almost +25 at noon. Temps have been below zero every night this past week and the ice is really thickening. Note to self.....bring power auger next time!

It sure would be different to be able to get on my snowmobile (first I would have to purchase one) at my home and go ice fishing on Bear Lake. Man am I jealous. Scott, I bet you count your blessings every once in awhile.

By the way, we are headed to the east side at TV cove and 2nd Point tomorrow at 8:00am. We'll hit TV cove first for whitefish at the weedbed and then hit about 70' off 2nd point for trout. Not many people fishing this area this year, so maybe it will be the ticket!

Sounds like fun. Another blessing, not having to get up at 3:00 AM to be able to get out fishing at an early hour.[Smile]

Sounds like a decent day for you Scott. I have not been up this winter. Busy almost every weekend. Maybe in a week or two. I will come up and make a weekend of it and open up the house. Then I can do like you do and walk out the door, start the sled and drive right out from the front door!

Then a hot totty, the recliner and dinner and I dont have to drive home that night!

Did you see any pirates up there today?

Later buddy

There were at least 3 pirates out besides myself. I never talked to them, but I saw them huddled up in shelters with sleds. I thought a couple of times about going to see if really was them, but I stayed put with the fishing.
