[green][cool]Hey there FGD I prefer the 1st whip finisher. Guess that is because the one I have came in the kit of Dr. Slicks that I originally purchased.[/green] [green]With a whip finisher one can go as far up the shank as necessary to correct any problems or what ever. That would be kind of tough to do by hand. [/green]

Your comment didn't make me feel stupid. Although the flygodess put me in check I thought the whip I had was a thompson but it is a Matareli. The flies I have been tying seem to work well, the fish haven't noticed I couldn't finish it pretty. I haven't had any come undone on me while fishing yet. I will check out the other video for the matareli tool, the other demos I looked at were only still shots maybe the video will be more detailed

Good point DR.
I have two of the second one. One the normal size I guess at 4" long with a 1 1/2" hook, but I have a tiny one for Midges. Not that the bigger one wouldn't work, I am a tool junky
One thing to remember is the "TRIANGLE" you form a triangle and it is easy. Sorry for the picture being out of focus, was holding bobbin in one hand and camera/snap in my otherhand. Got to teach Baxter to help on these shots!

I agree different situations call for different applications. I was looking for a better knot than the one I have been tying. Now I have gained the knowledge of a better fingerknot and now can use my whip tool. The still frames I have been trying to follow were not very helpful but the video that was posted made it a very simple tool to use.

..I agree .. it was a very good video.. did you notice that that same series of videos showed how to tie off your fly by hand?? and I forgot to look to see if they had something on a half hitch tool..

I took a look at that David's fly tying site, watched 2 lessons. He tied his knots with his fingers in both. What is your opinion on using bright unnatural colors when tying. I'm fishing in very skinny moutain creeks.

I thought you were referring to the site saberfish gave us.. expert village I think it was.. it had the very good video on using the whip finishing tool.. plus it had at least one video on tying off by hand.. similar to how David Cammis does it..
.. as for colors.. I am very new to the art of tying flies so I hope I have not projected myself as an expert.. but.. tyers I know on this site such as flygoddess, in most cases, usually tells me to go nuts with color.. but my fishing situation here is on stillwaters.. so I am not sure what colors or variances of colors could or would be used in the situation you described..

Keeping it real seems logical, but hard to see at times. I am fishing very skinny waters with a lot off little rapids and turbulants so visibilty would be nice. But I am having a hard time convincing myself that these finicky fish would rather hit a flourecent piece of yarn over something that resembles an insect. I also haven't fished for trout for almost 20yrs. and when I did I was using spinnig gear throwing rooster tails and worms, and with much embarressment little balls of wonder bread wich did quite well. I watched a video wich showed a parachute fly that seems like it may be the ticket, keeping the color on the upside of the lure.

here is an alternative you may want to try.. and this has been discussed here before..
if your'e concerned the fish wont like colors in their "food" Id keep it looking as real as you can .. but.. to help keep track of whats going on you could use a small flourescent colored indicator.. you can buy these or make them yourself.. again.. just a suggestion...
