Hit Newton around nine this morning with a little snow falling with the temps in the upper twenties. The lake was fogged over and after a few hours it lifted to leave me with my first major sunburn of the year. We fished the dam side and caught a few nice perch, a couple of crappie and 3 largemouth bass. We moved to the North part of lake and caught some more perch. We wound up catching around 50 perch, 2 crappie, and 3 bass. This was a slow day. We kept a few for the fryer. We had a good time. The ice was in pretty good shape. The edges were softening and had water on them. A few more days of warm weather could make it a bit dicey. It has been colder up in Logan and I am itching for some soft water. Looks like the Wasatch Front will be boat fishin before Cache Valley.

The water level before it froze was right up to the bottom of the boat ramp witch is a lot better then the last couple years. I would say it will be at fool pool this year as much snow as they have up stream from there. It should be exellent musky and bass fishing with all that flooded brush.M.H.

nice report lord. sounds like you had a good day, you say it was slow i say 56 fish would be a blast!! sounds like a good place to take the kids out as long as the edges last. looks like you lived up to your name. how big were the crapie?

I am far from a professional crappie fisherman. The crappie were small. I cannot find a steady bite this year or any big ones. After the lake got low and killed a lot, the lake is definately on the rebound. Last years spawn on crappie and bass was phenominal and I suspect that the size of crappie will get better if the water level will be consistently high. The musky should grow with all of the small fish. The perch are actually bigger at Newton than at Hyrum. I am ready for high water. I do agree with muskyhunter that it will again fill up this year. I am the ski boats will be out in full force this year as well.
Wanted to add, when we got to the lake, I fished a spot some 50 yards away from some guys and they were saying "f"ing this and gd that. Hearing that crap can really make a outing miserable. Has anyone ever approach someone about their cursing and what did you say? I have two little girls and it just bothers me. Families came out and they still kept it up.

I agree. I wish some people would just realize who is around and be a good citizen. I teach high school and some of the kids have some of the worst mouths. I am really scared for the next generation. Their needs to be more people like you 2fishon who speak up and take a stand.

Fished Newton today (3/9) with my boy...and yes the edges are starting to look pretty soft, but we had no trouble getting on the ice. Thankfully someone left a plank over on the SW corner and it worked out great. It's close to becoming unaccessible though, maybe a week or so depending on the temps.
We caught 20-something fish each, some where largemouth bass, but most were just the perch. Not bad for only a couple hours. The biggest was only 8". We were hoping for some 'gills or crappies, or even a tiger musky but no dice. They loved the chartruese colored jigs, and for the most part they were just barely 'bumping' the jig but some actually hit hard and inhaled the whole thing. Go figure.
First time ice fishing Newton, and only the 3rd time I've ever been there. The water level was pretty low, but I'm sure with all the snow-pack we've received it will be a full reservoir again real soon. It was a fantastic and warm day to be out with my 11 yr. old.
I agree with what Lanee and some of you already said in here. Especially when kids are out there fishing, people need to be mindful and respectful of others and that means watching their language. I'm afraid the next generation is going to be at an all-time low when it come to values and morals. That wasn't a problem today as we only saw one other out fishing with his kid. Other than that, we had the whole lake to ourselves. : )

Lavaman I am glad you were able to catch some. Those same guys who were swearing did catch a musky. They couldn't get it through he hole. I over heard them because they were loud and obnoxious that they hooked a small perch and used it as live bait. I tell you, some upstanding fishermen.

Lanee I want to go back over there and try for a muskie! Not sure if the edges will hold up 'til next weekend though. What do you think?
