Green river/ FG report
#1
Went to browns park on fri. Fishing was a little slow but everyone in our party caught fish. No real good ones this year though , our largest was 21" with most between 15"-19"
At 5:00pm we headed back up to the gorge, after getting something to eat we hit the ice at 7:00 pm. We caught pup macs fast and furious for the next 3-4 hours, between 8 of us there was always on on a line and sometimes 2 or three. We did manage 4 burbot (our intended target) but the lake trout was fun. We had a couple of heavy break offs due to lighter gear (would have liked to seen um!)Most iced were in the 20-25" range and from 2-6 LBS. I'll try and post some pics later on. (my son took his camera to work this morning)

Nice report Lonnie. For as late as you were fishing it is surprising you did not catch more burbot. Do you mind sharing the area you were you fishing on the Gorge? Looking forward to seeing those pictures. WH2

We were fishing off a point down a dirt road just before you hit the wyoming border, I don't remember the exact name (something springs) it's a couple miles past the antelope flats turn. We all lost probably two fish to every one caught, and many had a differant fight to them ( possible burbot) we got out there late (7:30) and the extreme fast fishing was over arround 10:00. But it was a blast . We were using glow tube jigs with sucker meat and smelly jelly. We found the secrete to fast fishing was to keep recharging the glow jigs with a light . No bite in 5 -10 min, reel in and recharge it again. I hope that helps. Lonnie

Yea, that sounds like the same method we have used when fishing for the burbot. When we fished farther up the lake, that late in the day all we caught were burbot. It makes me wonder if there are fewer burbot in the area you were fishing. Sounds like you were fishing at spring creek that is at The Glades. From the map I have, it looks like that area is near some deep water, was there a rocky shore line where you were fishing?

Nice report Lonnie. Like WiperHunter stated, there are fewer burbot as you head downlake. For more burbot just head further north, at least above Anvil Draw. That's pretty awesome how you laid into the macks though. Not every day, or night for that matter, that you can't keep the macks off your line!

Yes the area was rocky and droped off deep fast. We had holes drilled in a pattern covering about 25 yds and our depth ranged from 22-48 feet, We caught everything at 35-37ft though. I think we were right over a shelf layered area. We would have gone furture up the wyoming side, but with all the kids there none of us wanted to buy the extra permits for them all for a couple hours fishing.

How was the ice conditions there? Is it getting soft? Do you need a ladder to get on the ice? Nice job on the pup macs, and the burbot.

The ice was a solid 20" and easy shore access. There was one open hole by the shore though. I could only see right arround us as we did'nt get there until after dark. The rosd in requires 4 wheel drive as it was a little snotty

Ya it was even our first try ice fishing the gorge (at least in 25 yrs) I had two of my sons and 3 of my sons 14 yr old pals (2 of which had never done any fishing of any kind) Needless to say they had a blast, for one 2 hr period we had nonstop action (bites, hook upa, or iced every couple of minutes) It seemed to easy to be true, the night far exceeded my expectations. Just wish we could have got into more burbot. And I know on the next trip we won't be out there with 6lb test and light weight ice rods. I know we had several break offs that were obviously much larger than the 2-5 pounders we iced. We'll definetly return next year for another try. I thought it was just beginers luck and hitting the right place at the right time.
