The ice floats on top of the water. Lowering the water will also lower the ice. But it doesn’t change the structure of the ice in any way. The edge ice will be sitting on ground instead of floating on water and will have a slope to it following the slope of the land underneath. Why would you think it unwise to go out on the ice under these conditions? Just curious.
Rising water and ice is another story. The shoreline gap between ice and water will be greater as the water level rises making it difficult and possibly dangerous to get on and off the ice. [signature]

Read my pineview report from last year and you will see the risks.[]

I read that and agree, it was scary as Hell. But consider the difference between the banks at Pineview and the banks at Mantua. While Pineview banks are almost straight up and down, the shoreline at Mantua is a very gentle slope comparatively speaking.
A bit of caution is certainly prudent at Mantua, but falling water would not keep me from using it if I were so inclined. Hyrum is a body of water that has both conditions – steep banks and gentle slopes. Launching at the Sate Park area is a gentle slope and would not create any problems for access. And speaking of Pineview, I’m thinking of heading up there tomorrow to see if I can launch my snowmobile from the Cemetery Point beach area. Going down the narrows path is not an option for any motorized entry. [signature]
