Thread the new line through, tie it on, put some tension with your off-hand fingers, and reel it on until its full.

I agree. I know people spend money on a set up that will help but I found that just holding the line in your hand to keep the line snug works fine.

One key thing is how the line is unwrapping from the spool. With a spinning reel, lay the spool on the ground and make sure that the line is comming off the spool the same direction it is being wrapped on the reel. If it's not, the line will "twist" on the reel, causing you problems when you start casting.

what kind of line are you thinking about spooling. The super lines will need a mono backing first. If you go that route you will need to tie a line to line knot, the Albright or a bloodknot will work fine.
As far as reeling your line on I have heard of people putting the line in a bucket of water while reeling in. If I don't have someone to help put some tension on the spool stick the pencil through the spool and hold it with your feet or jam it in the couch cushions.

Being kind of a novice myself I just go to Sportsman's Warehouse and for the price of the line the will put it on for you. I have never had a problem with this method. I give them my reel and I go and drool over the pontoon boats for a while and ta-da it is all done for me. This would not be practical for those pros who change line alot, but I only get re-spooled once a year.
